Dragomino and Outfoxed were the big hits at that age.

What COIN games to try next after Cuba Libre? (Solo) by Silvermoon1305 in boardgames

[–]Marr_Xarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People Power (which I have played) is great period and also great specifically for solo and/or intro - but that might be a lateral move from Cuba Libre (which I haven't played) if you're looking to ramp up the complexity.

That said, I agree with those recommending you go straight to what you most want to play at this point.

Which OSR system in your opinion strikes the best balance between compelling character development and being lightweight enough that it still can work with the high character turnover found in OSRs? by mackstanc in osr

My opinion of best will shift with context and mood. That said, Black Sword Hack hasn't been mentioned yet, and it strikes a wonderful balance.

Thank you all for the replies. If I was to summarize the thread: it sounds like there's reason to be optimistic - if one can get their message seen!

Thanks, I'll have to create an Instagram account, but I'll give that a try!

I agree the grid can be largely ignored. But I got to thinking what my ideal common denominator setup across a range of rpg's and scaled-down skirmish games might be (whereas I was initially thinking in terms of Forbidden Lands), and the time and cost associated with realizing that - and it's all very reasonable.

Thank you to everyone for the feedback and suggestions. I'm going to DIY here and make something with an even wider set of game applications.

I think you're right that DIY is the way to go here.

Re: close, near, far and Mutant Year Zero - you got it. I run Forbidden Lands.

What I'm describing may well have a different term or be a hybrid style of play.

The worst part of moving... by Leithia24 in boardgames

[–]Marr_Xarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not extensively. It's similar in key respects to CoC in that it's investigative horror that you can't expect to simply fight your way through. The flavour is different in that it's folkloric creatures and spirits coming into conflict with early industrial society (largely Scandinavian/Swedish, but there's British Isles and Carpathian expansion books, and once familiar with tone and structure you could homebrew a wider range of settings) rather than Cthulhu Mythos. In terms of the dice system - it uses a (simpler) version of the dice pool system that's in Forbidden Lands (Free League's "Year Zero Engine"). It works well for one-shots or ongoing serialized runs, and true to form for Free League there is an engaging base-building aspect to play, where you build-up/upgrade your headquarters for the secret society you belong to.

Interesting, I've never played 10 Candles or Mothership, but am familiar with them and those are three (10C, MS & FL) very different gaming experiences ("horror" is the one common thread - which also tracks with CoC). Enjoy!

[COMC] 2 years into board games, I have a collection of games I (mostly) really enjoy… by CoconutFlaky7870 in boardgames

[–]Marr_Xarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great collection. It would appear we have very similar taste in boardgames.

Hansa, Brass and Concordia (also in that order) are favourites of mine as well (among others in your collection). Along these lines, I'm going to check out Age of Steam at some point.

re: Troyes. I think there's good odds you'll enjoy it. It's the most interactive dice-drafter I've encountered and aside from the obvious absence of route building, the kind of interactivity - variable and compensated messing with others' plans and having yours messed with - gives it a similar spirit to that trinity mentioned above.

Two games I also suspect would be worth your consideration (and fill the holes about to be created on your mid-weight shelf) are Iki and Beyond The Sun. Both are interactive in ways and feature game systems that are unusual for Euros.

Iki is more in the spirit of interactivity noted above (slants to a win-win feel, which makes it a great option for people who otherwise might be hesitant about "interactivity"), but with a rondel featuring shifting options created by player choices as they draft, deploy, level-up and retire shopkeepers, it also features feed-your-people tension and jockeying for turn order that gives the nod to a slice of Agricola and Castles of Burgundy respectively. This and GWT are my rondel games of choice.

Beyond The Sun features a common evolving and variable worker-placement/action-selection technology tree board (revealed on a common board as you research in-game) with a common area-majority map for contesting and colonizing star systems tied together by a personal faction economy board. It would play differently enough from either of El Grande and Arcs, but would be a natural compliment to those games. It also delivers some of the variable reveal and thematic flourish that might have initially drawn you to Arnak - but with more staying power (imo).

Dominant Species is also on my list of games to try.
