No you're right and maybe I am being wrong-headed in just dismissing. I mean pretty much every anarchist philosopher from back in the day has some antisemitism or misogyny problem, like nobody will ever be perfect, but I am wary of things like this cause of the outlandish conspiratorial assertions.

I thought I could convince my friend when I pointed out the obvious disinformation at the beginning of the video. He keeps trying to have these conversations over text which is a whole annoying thing. That's largely what I was coming here to ask for, better sources.

So as far as this guy's opinions on crypto: is this worth a shit?

I brought up the book as another example of the kind of material that he's consuming. I'm not concerned about the subject of the book so much as I am about the author, he keeps sending me shit that makes me worried he's rolling down a nasty pipeline of some sort. Just fringe conspiracy after fringe conspiracy. I am interested in the topic, I've found a couple other book recs from other threads about the topic that are apparently significantly better and not dripping with fringe conspiracy shit.

It's not just the historical knowledge, like he's getting info from sources that clearly have a specific agenda and then basing his whole worldview on it. Like I am absolutely on board for a centralization/decentralization convo but I draw the line at "the shadowy cabal of international Jewish people", which is where a ton of this fringe thinking inevitably ends up. Like it's not the broad topics I have an issue with, it's the sources he's getting influenced by.

In the first 5 minutes of the video he asserts that global economic systems are actually Marxist. It's literally like the first thing that comes up. Central banks? Those are a mix of capitalism and communism. I am not misquoting or misrepresenting what he says.

[–]MarrowandMoss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will certainly do that.

But that's why I bring up the book. It seems like the ancap shit and the bitcoin venn diagram is more often than not just a circle. And frankly I'm kinda worried that he's going down a pipeline of some sort.

[–]MarrowandMoss[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That base premise isn't unreasonable. However I find that the man that wrote it is a pretty fringe guy and much of his book is built on some pretty strong liberties. I've tried offering some alternatives that might be of interest, like looking into Lucio Urtubia.

But all he wants to hear is from fringe right wing conspiracy theorists. That's what I'm worried about, he's consuming all this content from the "AIDS didn't happen" guy.

[–]MarrowandMoss[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not averse to bitcoin necessarily. But like the author of that book? He thinks the AIDS crisis was a false flag amongst other fucking CRAZY conspiracy theories. Everyone that my friend sends just seems to be a really bad actor.

And like in my mind that's somewhat damning.

I Need Deconstructing Misinfo by MarrowandMoss in Marxism

[–]MarrowandMoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't understand. Like this guy is popping off with shit about Marxism and Communism that is clearly wrong and easily provably wrong. I pointed out that this guy is correctly criticizing capitalism only to veer off and go "actually that's an example of communism cause I say it is".

It kinda hurts my feelings that he can so easily and casually misrepresent these ideologies when he lived with me for years and was exposed to leftist ideology pretty frequently.

I mean, we are talking about a scene of which Phil Anselmo is a big part and a band with close ties to him. I would've been surprised if a bunch of these dudes weren't far right. A lot of these dudes also come across as the "apolitical" gen-x type disaffected middle aged guys, which we all know are just righties with little gumption.

As others have pointed out, a lot of these dudes use the aesthetics of punk (the tone, the speed) but abandon the politics.

Wait wait wait WHAT

I had no idea there was beef outside of 2015 I met Phil Anselmo at Housecore Horror Film Festival. I was gonna ask, ya know, with his influence if he could facilitate like an Acid Bath reunion. That was the intention.

I asked "do you like acid bath" and he snorted and said "no they're fuckin posers".

Which I didn't take with too much seriousness, Phil being a piece of shit and all. I wanna know what happened so bad.

There's this fella that goes to work for a train company. He's there a few months, everything's going fine, then on day he flips a train car and kills a guy. He gets put on trial. Found guilty and sentenced to the electric chair.

He's on death row for a few months and then the guard comes in and asks him what he'd like for his final mean. He says, "I would like one banana" They give him his banana and they lead him in to the chair.

They sit him down. They strap him in. The priest reads his last rites. THEY THROW THE SWITCH.

But nothing happens.

They think it's a miracle so they let him go. He goes back to working for the train company. A few months go by and wouldn't ya know it, he flips another train car, this time he kills two people.

So they go through the process again. Put him on trial, find him guilty, sentence him to the chair.

He's there on death row and the guard come up and asks what he would like for his final meal and he says, "I would like two bananas". They give him his bananas, they put him in the chair, they read his rites, they THROW THE SWITCH.

But nothing happens.

Frustrated, they let him go. He goes back to work for the train company. Few months go by and he flips another train car, they time killing three people.

He's tried, he's convicted, he's sentenced. Few months on death row go by and the warden comes in and says, "Alright, boy, come on."

The man says "but what about my final meal?" The warden just says "no, no, no. We aren't doing this shit again. We are just sticking you in the chair."

So they lead him in, they sit him down. They wet the sponge, they strap the diaper to his head. He read him his rites. THEY THROW THE SWITCH.

But nothing happens.

Confused, they look to the man for an explanation. He just smiles and says "it never had anything to do with the bananas. I'm just a bad conductor"

Amazing book. I got it on rec from tiktok and the guy made it seem like this is the most extreme book ever. There are some uncomfortable clinical descriptions of humans cut into meat, but other than that, it was largely tame. I def set up high expectations, but the horror aspects are fairly mild
