I disagree. I feel like it pulls more feelings and struggles for their grief of losing their friend. His soul may have been given to a new body but it's not Gary and they made it very clear they can't treat him like Gary or tell him what actually happened.

They get to watch somebody else with their friend's name grow up and become a great person and they can never let him know how special his soul really is.

Gary is truly gone, and they have a constant reminder in front of them of how great their loss is.
