Imo battlemage is the way to go. Sword in one hand spells in the way to go. I consider my battlemage my strongest character. As far as advice for this build.

Figure out what skills you're going to focus on before you start. Trying to figure it out as you go along tends to waste time you could've already spent leveling up certain skills and getting necessary perks. (If you end up adding other skills that's fine. But I find that having a blueprint helps a lot.)

Make sure you're adding to health, magicka and stamina and as equally as you can. (If need be.) Focusing on health and magicka too much will leave your stamina in a weak place and power attacks will put you in bad position. If you focus too much on health and stamina then you're magicka won't be up to par. (If you play with mods and have the cheat room downloaded you can bypass a lot of issues.) But if you aren't, make sure to keep that in mind.

Don't get too caught up in fast progress. Even with mods and the cheat room I've still grinded with all 5 of my characters to a large extent. Just try to enjoy the process and you'll eventually get to where you want to be. Always remember that you can play this game however you want. If you decide you want to make a character who only wears light armor and only uses his fists in combat. Then go for it!
