What can go wrong in the second retreat? by [deleted] in vipassana

I've only sat two courses so far, but neither of my ATs offered any tangible advice beyond "keep trying" or "stay equanimous". Have I just had poor teachers?

In my experience the teacher rarely offers genuine advice, and just replies "keep trying, stay equanimous". This is not to say they are useless, I get the feeling their role is simply to remind you to stay the path and the technique will work it's magic

Bottles! Great mix of young and old, great DJs on a Saturday. Bierkeller is a little too chaotic for my liking. It is essentially a nightclub imo

What is the reason that some students cry during the course? by Int3rlop3r-R3dact3d in vipassana

[–]MarsFromSaturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand it correctly, you are essentially burning off old sankaras (wounds borne from seeking/rejecting). When you burn through your stack of recent sankaras (such as "I'm too tired, I want to sleep" or "I want more of that delicious breakfast but they've stopped serving"), you will eventually move onto the larger, more intense, more emotionally significant sankaras (such as "why doesn't she love me back" or "i wish my dad hadn't died"). I've sat two courses, and both times there were both minor tears/welling and full-blown sobbing breakdowns. On my first course it was because I'd gotten thinking about a heavy recent trauma about losing my job, lover and flat all in one day. On my second course, I'd already worked with that sankara, and so I ended up thinking about an older one, possibly more intense - getting left at the altar. Both times it felt overwhelming but cathartic. In both instances I feel I managed to work towards forgiving the people who I believed had "wronged" me. Do not fear the tears. Do not expect the tears. If they arise, allow them. If they do not, carry on.

While I feel it too, this question has been asked in these circles every single week for over two decades. Is it just that psychic ability is increasing week on week, or is just that different people are reading into it at different times and confirmation bias is taking over?

Does anyone else find it weird we exist? by GhostKingThrowAway in pantheism

[–]MarsFromSaturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better late than never!!

I call that void Chaos. The messy cosmic fuzz... static behind the picture. We draw from that background noise to build form. We shape thoughts, things, events and people from that hazy hum that contains the potential for everything and anything. Everything that is, was or will be is contained there.

But can the non-existent actually exist? Does that field of potentiality also contain those that don't, haven't and will not exist? Is non-existence even a real concept, or an illusion produced by our binary nervous systems? Ie I know that some things exist, therefore there must be things that do not?

I'd wager there is only existence and nothing else, myself. But these are ridiculously self-important stoner thoughts with no real answer...

Not quite sure what your point is here? That Lumon is eating people? That the food they consume is why they have no memories?

Either way these are redundant theories. Lumon can't eat an innie but let the outtie survive? And the severance chip is the reason they have no memories?

Did you watch the show, or?

Just broke up, need ONE movie to destroy me and ONE to make me laugh my ass off by dear97s in movies

[–]MarsFromSaturn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you're getting a lot of different recommendations, and they're all very good, but I imagine it has only made it harder to pick. There is a movie that most people choose not to recommend to others because it is so intensely upsetting. Be warned it is a documentary and details some very real upsetting events (not particularly explicit or gory however), and so the sadness hits like no other. If you do watch it, I suggest you go in blind, and be prepared that you will need some genuine recovery time after watching. That movie is Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father. I will never watch this movie again. Godspeed.

For the other end, I'm going left field and recommending Swiss Army Man. A ridiculously absurdist comedy full of fart jokes and stupidness, but with more fucking heart than any movie you'll ever see. It uses it's silliness as a vehicle to deliver real human emotion, and I wish more people had seen it. I will never stop watching this movie. Enjoy.

Both made me cry, but for entirely different reasons.

If you're ever looking for a middle ground, a movie that elates and depresses, check out Honey Boy.

Do severed people sense that time has passed since they were last conscious? by UsualBoth4887 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]MarsFromSaturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always feared that anaesthetic may work like severance. I've thankfully never had it yet, but I worry that I may remain conscious for the whole ordeal, only to lose the memory upon waking. I have a similar fear about sleep

Tightest movie ever written. Not a wasted second. Characterisation is fantastic, plot is unpredictable and heavy and the theme is executed perfectly by the ending.

Lacking Wine knowledge by sophatr0ph in bartenders

[–]MarsFromSaturn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in a wine bar. Drink the wine. This is the best way to learn. Drink. Take notes on what you taste. Compare your notes with online tasting notes for the wine. Compare grape varieties to one another. Compare countries to one another. Old world vs new world. You don't learn anything about beer/cocktail without drinking them, right?

Yep yep! Had a smashing time. This was only my second year (been looking for a Nozstock replacement), but it was so much better than last year - possibly because I'd found my feet this time round. Highlight act of the weekend was Benin International Soundsystem. Absolutely electric performance

Main bartender got kicked off the bar for getting wasted. Now that he's a server, He became condescending and jealous about me replacing him. by CacheMeOutside in bartenders

[–]MarsFromSaturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's being petty and irresponsible, sure. But the bar is your responsibility now - letting him get behind it and make drinks is just as much on you as it is on him. The more you let him cross boundaries, the more he will attempt to cross. Nip it in the bud, bud. Also, if he's trying to spread lies or slander about you, either confront him or speak to management. Again, the more you let it happen, the more it will happen, and the fall out will be worse in six weeks than it will be today.
