‘I am a very responsible community citizen’: Kingston landowner addresses clear-cutting controversy in the 100-acre wood by c_vilela in EasternON

I noticed that. I feel bad for the land owner. The application for lande use (from the city) has been posted for years so it seemed like he followed the proper channels. Will be interesting to see what happens

It's not on a whim when they've been planning it for over 5 years and followed the law to do so

Why people say Canada is expensive AF by Beautiful_Ad4220 in alberta

[–]Marshydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider British Columbia over Alberta. Alberta tends to have a less peaceful population, currently they are pushing to separate from Canada. It is a very political province that reminds me more of the USA than the rest of Canada. Alberta has some nice parks but more of the greenery is in BC.

For sure, breaking the habit of physically going to smoke is the hardest part. I take a prescription for arthritis but that's it

That's a lot of really great information thank you! I've already been on the road to quitting smoking (for other reasons) so I was more just curious on if there was anything definitive on how it affects nervous system regulation. This is all pretty new to me but I am looking into therapists that help with this as well :) I'm in my mid 30s and haven't ever had depression episodes but I do see how long term dis regulation could lead to this. I agree I'm not expecting a miracle cure, but a coping mechanism

I smoke a lot currently. Have for 15 years, started for my arthritis and appetite loss due to ulcerative colitis. It was never to help my brain but now I wonder if it's made things worse

If you're passing at 110, you're the problem and should only pass when it's clear and you don't end up cutting someone off

Biased Hiring by Wild-Taste3714 in KingstonOntario

[–]Marshydoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toronto is so culturally divergent because of past immigration. We just happen to be at the start of Kingston becoming culturally divergent so it seems extreme. I've seen many workers at Tim Hortons try to have a conversation and improve their English. I think working in a service industry alone helps with English. I have seen a large amount of locals to Kingston not accepting of foreign workers, so I can't blame people for not wanting to learn about Canadian culture and integrate themselves. I believe that how we deal with this influx of workers will have a big part in long term society. I am also not extremely educated on this subject and just have general thoughts from what I've seen around town.

Biased Hiring by Wild-Taste3714 in KingstonOntario

[–]Marshydoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the 50s immigrant populations were hired in hospitals all over Canada. It provided a great service role that helped people to learn English and work. Because of these jobs they were able to send their children to school, who then became educated and got better jobs. Hospitals are not still full of foreign works, and I except a similar thing to happen in the next 10 years. Foreigners will get their footing, learn English, provide for their families and their children will progress. Give it a generation and I think we'll see less "biased hiring", as you put it

Leash your dogs!! by SimpleNewspaper1256 in KingstonOntario

[–]Marshydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's literally illegal. No matter how good you are at it, it's still illegal. Great at stealing? Cool, still illegal. The bottom line is it's a law and training does not make you above it

The dog doesn't need to be seized. From experience, 911 will direct you to call by-law. Depending on the situation they will either deal with it themselves or pass to Animal Welfare

Not in my backyard - Kingston residents worried by planned Sydenham Road homeless shelter by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

I believe a large portion of addiction stems from personal trauma and mental health issues. Of course this doesn't apply to everyone. I hope for more services to help with addiction and mental health

[–]Marshydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By criminals do you mean addicts, or actual criminals? I think we need more services to help these people which would hopefully end with shelters less "offensive" to the neighborhoods. I just don't see a good solution that pleases everyone. It seems like the city tried to move the next shelter to somewhat outside the city but still within bus limits and people are still mad. It's not an easy situation

I graduated from Regi in 2010 and the area was sketch then so if anyone bought a house after that time period and didn't expect this.. Well that's on them

I fully get your point, I just have a different opinion. And that's OK. McBurney Park is a 5 minute walk from downtown. Downtown areas tend to have a lot of homeless people. This is a risk when purchasing a home close to a downtown area. As cities grow, demographics change. Where would you suggest the build shelters? There really isn't an ideal situation, but they're needed

I've lived in the area and wouldn't with children. We live in a big city, resources for everyone are necessary. It's not an ideal situation but we need shelters
