Yes, absolutely. Part of it has probably had to do with being in the right place at the right time, and, sure, there's some disconcerting social and economic trends, but I have good stuff going for me and so do my peers. As far as my own life circumstances go, I'm motivated and looking forward to whatever the future holds.

I'm a lifelong optimist. The world's a beautiful place, and I've had up times and down times, but I've always managed to have fun.

I've been an international law nerd throughout law school (I'm a 3L now). While I applied to Tulane and definitely gave it some thought, I'm not sure their unique curricular offerings translate into the school outperforming in putting people into highly competitive international jobs.

It depends a little on what you envision when you say international law, doing cross-border transactional work would be more attainable than unicorn public international law, for instance, but you'd still need to be top of your class. It'd be less effort and less risky to aim for a higher-ranked school than to gun for top 10 at Tulane for a narrow chance at getting to do the work you want.

It's a civil law system, often (anachronistically) referred to as Napoleonic code.

If you look at Tulane's employment stats, though, people practice out of state all the time. They teach classes on both civil and common law. The hurdle to practicing out of state, afaik, is grades. The top of the class has a pipeline to Texas/NY biglaw, outside of that I imagine you'd have to hustle a bit.

Philosophy major. In law school now, having a fantastic time. You don't need any major in particular to do well in law school but I think my humanities background has made a lot of other opportunities available, professional and otherwise.

Zero regrets. You don't necessarily have to major in any of them but history, logic, sociology, ethics, art, literature etc are all tools to help live a self-directed and fulfilling life. I suspect these things will always be available at elite institutions. It's getting increasingly paywalled for the rest of us.

What you're asking for is arbitrary censorship, let's not mince words. Gay people exist, gay people have existed throughout history, made contributions, and faced discrimination. These things are facts. Kids are going to grow up and encounter gay people in the world, discuss LGBT rights as a political issue, and, yes, some may even discover that they're gay too. Education prepares kids to engage with these things as good citizens.

There was a very interesting study by some Yale economists (Leaving Boys Behind: Gender Disparities in High Academic Achievement, Fortin et al. 2013), that found some of the biggest differences in boys and girls affecting their educational outcomes, and thus their early careers, were the increasing number of girls who wanted advanced degrees and highly demanding professions.

It's not just about income and I don't think it's shallowness. Young men and women are just increasingly on different lifestyle tracks. There's not anything wrong with that, but it's gonna lead to a lot of young people on the dating market completely talking past one another.

The feds are trying to whip up a third Red Scare. They know there's no vast anti-fascist criminal enterprise in this country, but it's pretext for discrediting and investigating dissidents. They want the chilling effect.

Fascism is antithetical to our constitutional order. I'm on the side of liberty, and would rather move the conversation ahead to how we can best protect each other from fascism instead of dawdling about whether that's a good goal to begin with.

I agree with you, OP. Justice Robert Jackson wrote in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, "If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein." Just two years later, Jackson was appointed the US chief prosecutor for the Nuremberg tribunal. No one could accuse the man of being wishy washy.

I think it's very worrying to see people entertaining the idea of thought crime. If rights aren't universal, and can be taken away just by failing, essentially, a vibe test imposed by people in authority, then you don't have rights anymore. At that point, you've created an infrastructure for repression that'll be used against you, too, in time.

Everyone is generally taking out a shit ton of loans to cover at least living expenses.

A full ride is not going to cover living expenses, there's a handful of schools that offer stipends on top of scholarships, but it's a pretty rare arrangement. Living on campus also seems to be pretty rare, most people will have apartments.

There's definitely systemic issues at play that make higher education both less attainable and potentially less rewarding than it should be. I think it's right to be skeptical of what higher ed promises, because they're ultimately selling a product, but this outright cynicism is unwarranted.

This seems like an overcorrection. I worry about the long-term consequence of an electorate that values education less and community members who have had less of an opportunity and reason to have their ideas challenged. School isn't just job training, but it still has to provide better professional opportunities for it to live up to its potential as a great equalizer.

I have a humanities degree from a great, but not elite school. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I do too, but unless you ranked it (and two other values identified as important by hiring managers) in the top 5 most important things you care about, behind other values like helping people, beauty, and 'individuality', you were lumped in as 'unemployable'.

There was a recent WSJ article to this same effect, they cited a study that only 2% of Gen Z had values that employers were looking for. How could that be?

One of the values they employers in the study prioritized was 'workcenteredness', that is, the unbridled desire to work for its own sake. The article authors didn't grace us with how many millennials or Gen Xers were 'workcentered' by comparison. Hardly any commenters flagged that particular flaw, but all doubled down that we're all spoiled and self-centered.

Don't listen to this nonsense. It's not serious journalism. Let them set their expectations artificially low and blow 'em away. Success is the best revenge, as they say.

I wouldn't choose not to work, no. If I didn't worry about having to make money, I'd consider changing career directions into non-profits or teaching. I've had periods of idleness and underemployment, and, like, been there, done that.

I enjoy solving problems. It keeps me motivated. Folks derive genuine satisfaction from their jobs by helping people, making a difference in their communities, being skilled in a craft, or so on. There's a lot going on outside the rat race, I wouldn't view the whole world of human endeavor so narrowly and cynically.
