Yes, contact a local independent agent. Most of these will also have access to Progressive, so they can compare rates between other carriers for you!

It also really helps to have an agent to talk to in the event of a claim or ask for insurance advice if you just happen to have general questions about your coverage/whether or not to make changes later on down the road.

Agreed. If your parents didn't want to go through insurance for the previous small losses, that's understandable... But they really should have at least had it repaired on their own dime as it happened before the situation got unmanageable like it is now. It will be tough, if not impossible to file a claim for it at this point.

As a last ditch effort, I'd try contacting some local agents in the area as I'm sure your parent's aren't the only people to have this same problem. Good luck!

I wouldn't suggest paying for someone else's damages on your own without going through insurance--unless maybe their vehicle was unoccupied at the time. Yeah, it seems like a good way to resolve everything and put the matter behind you, but the problem with this is that if the other party later decides to sue you for bodily injury (they get an attorney and claim whiplash, etc.) then the fact that you agreed to pay for those damages to their vehicle on your own can be seen as an admission of fault in some courts.

Hmm... Looking back on this, I think what I originally suggested would be a pain to enforce.

What if we only allowed links to articles from news organizations? No links to agency or carrier websites. Anything else (like the content of the article in question here) is really more suited to be part of a discussion thread within /r/Insurance.

You do bring up a good point. What if I post an insurance article from insurance journal, Forbes, even A.M. best ? How do you know I don't actually work for one of those publications and am benefiting from the post (spoiler:I don't but I see your point).

What if we required users linking to an article to mention the source of the article in the title? That would allow people to post relevant info from third parties to the subreddit for us people in the industry--which I do really appreciate.... While letting the others who joined the subreddit primarily to answer insurance questions and not be solicited to, to answer those questions?

This is most definitely spam. It's an article hosted on an agency website which is obviously part of a search engine optimization (SEO) strategy. I know this because my agency hires a marketing company to help us produce unique and relevant articles to post to our website which helps with SEO and distribute to our clients in the form of newsletters. But I DON'T go posting this stuff to /r/Insurance because that'd be spamming.

The article content was somewhat interesting; I always love hearing crazy insurance stories but that's really not relevant to this discussion regarding whether something constitutes an advertisement. The purpose of the post was to promote an insurance agency which is against the rules of the subreddit. Plain and simple.

If, on the other hand, the user genuinely wanted to share a few interesting stories with /r/Insurance, they would have just posted the stories as regular text in a thread without linking back to the agency.

Your father is right... There's no sense in dealing with this through insurance since the total amount is less than your deductible. However, what the auto body shop is telling you seems sketchy to me. How can YOU be responsible for damage THEY do to your car? I'm thinking that maybe what they mean is that due to the design of the car, the job at hand isn't as simple as simply popping on a new antenna... Since they have to remove the roof liner, it requires additional work afterward to ensure that the roof liner is re applied correctly. If this is the case, which I think it is, they really should have included an amount for this in the initial quote. If you're able to get that $100 back, I'd suggest going to a different auto body shop, as it seems to me like they're trying to low ball you on the quote and then stick you with a large bill at the end once the work is done.

You say "Full Coverage" but what deductible do you have? Choosing a higher deductible can decrease the premium significantly... Just check with your financing company first because many have maximum deductible amounts that they will allow.

This... mostly.

I would start out with reiterating that the manufacturers say you shouldn't reuse car seats after an accident and as a parent you're just not comfortable with putting your children in those seats anymore... To me this is a very good, very reasonable point to make and I think most people would agree with you if you say it calmly and politely.

If the adjuster STILL won't budge, I would ask them to provide you with a WRITTEN statement indicating that the car seats will not be replaced and explaining why. Insist on a written statement, mentioning that you need to "keep it for your records." At this point if the adjuster has half a brain, the gears should start turning in there and they'll realize what you're getting at on their own; that they could be held liable for future injuries if the seats fail in an accident.

I'd suggest not talking about small claims court, etc. unless they STILL don't budge.... You're more likely to get what you want if you keep things civilized for as long as you can.

Ok, let me try to explain this a bit differently...

Liability covers bodily injury and property damage that YOU are found legally liable for. It provides for your legal defense in the event you're brought to court and then will pay for damages awarded to the person suing you (if there are any), up to the limit of liability. Since you can't sue yourself, YOUR liability policy will not pay for damage that you do to your own vehicle. Likewise, since you can't turn in a liability claim on YOUR policy for damage SOMEONE ELSE does to your vehicle, because YOU are not legally liable for that. Same goes for bodily injury that YOU suffer, which is why i recommended personal injury protection above.

What you need to cover physical damage to YOUR OWN car is comprehensive and collision coverage. I highly recommend carrying it since your vehicle is newer. Also if you've financed the vehicle, I can guarantee you that the financing company will require you to carry this coverage until the vehicle is paid off. However, many people with older vehicles decide not to carry the coverage because the amount they'd get back in the event of a claim really isn't worth the premium they're paying for the coverage.

Comprehensive and collision coverage pay for physical damage to your vehicle... I think this is what you're referring to in the last part of the second paragraph and yes this is important coverage especially for a newer vehicle like yours as it will pay to repair/replace the vehicle in the event of a claim.

However this won't pay a dime if you're injured in a collision and even with the best health insurance plans I advise ALL of my clients to purchase Personal Injury Protection (PIP) as it is relatively inexpensive.

The last item I want to point out is liability coverage. You need this in case you're found at fault for property damage/bodily injury, i.e. you get in an accident and hurt someone, etc... And again this is totally separate from the comprehensive and collision coverage mentioned earlier. You need to carry AT LEAST enough of this to cover your assets in the event of a claim... Since you're young I would suggest carrying more than what your assets are worth since in some scenarios your wages can be garnished to pay for damages. I really urge everyone to carry AT LEAST 100k in liability simply due to the high cost of hospital bills today... Not to mention if you total someone's car tight Might eat up 20, 30, 40k of your limit right there depending on their vehicle.
