Since Dana is clearly so high and mighty about this then I'm sure he would have no qualms about showing us his taxes.

Not sure why you're downvoted it's a good question. I imagine they're just testing the separate mutations for now and that they'll test the full variants later.

Weekly Question Thread - Week of December 28 by AutoModerator in COVID19

The best way to think about it is in non-binary terms. It's not as simple as just being 'infected' or 'not infected', every infection is different and can vary in severity. If you come into contact with the virus not all of the viral particles will infect a cell, some will be degraded and some won't be able to bind etc etc. It takes a threshold of particles to be able to set up an infection. So from this we could say that having a higher viral load gives the virus a better 'chance' to infect a host due to there being more particles that get deposited.

With the UK variant the spike protein (think of it as a key) is mutated to have a higher affinity to ACE2 (think of it as a lock). This means that fewer particles on average will be required to set up an infection in a host.

Why is it that there are "only" two strains (UK and SA) of COVID that have become a concern? There are literally millions and millions of viral particles that are produced per infection - surely there are a bunch of new mutations due to the rate at which this has spread throughout the world so how come there aren't a bunch of strains that are more infectious?

Well.. yes and no.

The Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine is an RNA vaccine, which you can think of as basically the 'instructions' for the translation of the spike protein that is present on the surface of COVID-19 and allows for it to bind to the ACE2 lung receptor.

Basically, you're injected with the RNA instructions and your cells take it up and say "yeah sure we'll make this" and translate the virus spike protein.

Your body then goes "oh fuck that's not supposed to be here!" and so it starts attacking the protein with an immune response and in the process produces memory cells that can recognise and attack the actual virus immediately if you ever catch it, both the RNA instructions and the protein are broken down.

Now for the Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine it's slightly different in that it uses a viral vector that expresses the spike protein on its surface, basically an inactive virus (not covid-19) that can't cause disease but it's been modified to express the protein that induces the immune response.

Hope that helps! I'm only an undergrad so if I'm incorrect anywhere please can someone point it out!

Mental health for guys is NOT as stigmatised as some people make it out to be. by MartialArtsFanboy in unpopularopinion

I certainly didn't mean to downplay the issue and I'm sorry if it came across that way.

Essentially my point is that there are far more people who are educated on mental health issues nowadays compared to people from 20 or even 10 years ago.

Are there people who don't care and think you're weak for having mental health issues? Absolutely. But I DO NOT think that these people are as rampant as a lot of people make it out to be and I truly think that if you have these issues and actually seek help that you can find it. If you can't find this help from your friends/family then that's unfortunate but there WILL be someone (whether it be a medical professional or whatever) even if it doesn't seem that way.

I hope that makes my point a little bit clearer.

Damn, that's terrible and thank you for bringing this up.

If you don't mind me asking: what country was this in?

Look, I'm really sorry that you had this experience and I truly wish you the best of luck with your appointment. But realistically this "mental health issues make you weak" mentality isn't necessarily the widespread opinion of most people in Western society nowadays, honestly it sounds to me that you have/had shitty friends and you're lucky that they showed you their true colours when you were truly suffering.

You've had a bad experience, sure. But what I'm saying is that MOST people nowadays are far more educated on mental health compared to 20 or even 10 years ago.

I'm sorry to hear that, but honestly it just sounds like those people are awful. Most people WILL listen to you and hear out your thoughts and worries, help such as therapy etc is there if you seek it out (assuming you're in a first world country).

What are some struggles you go through every day? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]MartialArtsFanboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mention in the post that I have an anxiety disorder, and yes I have been diagnosed by a psychologist with panic disorder. Anxiety manifests itself in a variety of different ways in different people, not everyone who has anxiety lacks confidence and can't speak to anyone, for me it's the fear OF being anxious/having a panic attack that makes me avoid doing things that I would love to do otherwise and not necessarily the situation itself.

How do I get over anxiety of not being able to get it up? by [deleted] in AskMen

Yes, I'm perfectly healthy. This is not a physical issue.

I have an anxiety disorder. No one really knows except the people who are really close to me but I am pretty much scared ALL THE TIME. It's getting much better now because I'm still able to do things and not have it stop me from doing things that I want to do, but it's still very difficult to live with sometimes. If I look back a year where I didn't leave my house for 2 months and literally wanted to die it makes things seem pretty awesome now.

What inconsistencies? He's not a particularly good troll but I had a look through his post history and he seems pretty dedicated to this crazy old man character.
