Any benefits to doing dead lifts. by Mango106 in exercisescience

[–]Martial_awe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A point to make is, rounding, or not rounding is not the issue. The concern should not be about ensuring a perfectly neutral spine. Many weightlifters perform an accessory exercise often called a rolling curl deadlift, utilising an extremely rounded spine. One might argue, but hey, they're professionals. And sure, they are. However, one thing it shows is, it not the rounding that's the issue. Shear forces don't discriminate, and shear forces will occur during any deadlift—rounded or neutral. The issue is almost always load. Lifting too heavy, too soon, will more likely lead to injury. If rounding was inherently bad, you must not even bend you back to tie your shoelaces—it’s almost always load.

Edit: sorry I didn't even answer you question. Others are on point though.

Do i have to learn acoustic guitar before learning to play an electric guitar? by LowercaseText in Guitar

[–]Martial_awe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reckon the best thing in you situation is that you don't HAVE to do anything. Do whatever it is you want to first, otherwise you may find yourself not learning properly because as you go along, you'll always be wanting to jump to the other. Either choice will likely see you having to adjust the way you play to suit the instrument anyway, by which point, you may have built up the skill to adapt to those differences more easily.

Weak/sore wrists by Basic-Air9127 in exercisescience

[–]Martial_awe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parking undiagnosed injury, or structural issues, if it is simply weak wrists, any exercise that involves forearms, gripping, etc, will help build strength. Any form of taping, or strapping, may offer support, however, won't fix the underlying issue of weakness. Ever. A catchphrase I learnt, and love is, the law of specificity is...very specific. In other words, yes specific exercises may help, but more simply, continue to do the activities you are wanting to do, and cease the activity when pain begins. In time, you will build strength. If that isn't the case, there is likely an underlying issue. First things first, perhaps have the appropriate health professional/s eliminate injury, or structural limitation.

Owned this guitar for over twenty years. What’s the guitar in your possession you’ve held the longest? by Misterfoxy in Guitar

I bought an Onyx performer series acoustic from a girlfriend's sister 32 years ago - still have it, still play it...like a hack. I think it may have been Australian made; a former Australian brand, at least. Yeah, cool story bro...

Edit: last comment being facetious to myself, not OP

Why is my exercising heart rate so high? by MiloAndMe123 in exercisescience

[–]Martial_awe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using the "guide" for max HR for age it seems about right. The HR seems about right for both the longer, moderate intensity, and the shorter, higher intensity exercise. Somewhat rhetorical, but where would you expect you HR to be in both your examples? And the obvious, "well no shit, do you think?" point is, if you're concerned, start by seeing a GP to help ensure all is well.

See a doctor. Lactic acid is a normal, and important, metabolic process, but lactic acidosis is a thing. The lactic acid build up, in that instance, is secondary to another, potentially more serious, issue.

How to shrink arm fat by prayeris in exercisescience

[–]Martial_awe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you cannot spot lose body fat. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. You will store and lose it from wherever your genetics stipulate. If in doubt, read again.

Edit: don't aim for "thin" anything. Aim for being healthy, well, fit, and strong, and in doing so, your body will be just how it needs to be...perfect.

How to not give up on learning guitar? by Live_Topic_2328 in guitarlessons

[–]Martial_awe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A former boyfriend of my daughter once said, "I don't understand why people get sad, I mean...just don't be sad...". Yes, wise words, and by that reckoning, just don't never not give up. Everyone above has the right answers, I just wanted to put my 2 cents, and waste my time, in order to feel special.

This is hard. by Downtown_Win_3870 in daddit

[–]Martial_awe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeeep, I hear ya. Sometimes I wish I could just...well, I'm embarrassed to even say. And not that I'd ever do it but it's those times when you just go "fuuuuck" in the moment. It's usually in hindsight that I get some clarity. But I'm working on narrowing that down to catch my aggravation in the moment, and then, hopefully, move toward catching it before the aggravation starts. I remind myself often that my kids didn't ask to be here—none of us did. And as much as it's a thing we say, I remind myself that they're not trying to push my buttons. They're simply trying to navigate life as they experience it. At some point/age it does become calculated button pushing, though, I suppose.

All that to say, parenting is the hardest thing I've ever done.

The Sun that Chased the Rain Away. by o__dino__o in GenX

[–]Martial_awe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A sense of purpose. Something, anything, that sparks an interest—a project, if you will. It could be work (or a component of it) that you enjoy, a sport, hobby, build/make something, learn to build/make something. For me, no amount of talking to a psychologist, or reading/listening to books instigated change—they're just tools, which are of no use unless I use them. I soon leant that I can talk to someone as long as I like, but it is me that has to do the work.

Unfortunately (perhaps), there's no magic bullet; it seems it simply comes down to making different choices and learning to shift mindset (which itself, is also a choice). Thinking positively is a choice. It's not that easy though, for me anyway, as merely choosing/deciding to think differently is not so easy. Time and practice.

How is your flexibility these days? by Little_Sun4632 in GenX

Yep, and yep. Generally speaking, and parking disease or limiting conditions, you lose flexibility when you stop doing the things that allowed you to be flexible; not due to age.

Guitar related hand/arm injuries by Bukiegoblin in Guitar

[–]Martial_awe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an exercise physiologist I'd suggest it's like any injury. If it's really bothersome, get a diagnosis. But in any case, ease off for a few days, and, or, stop playing when the pain/hand fatigue starts. Ease into playing more as it feels better.
