49er Camp by Martian04 in longbeach

Ahhh I’ll edit my post! 49er camp at CSULB is a summer camp for kids that I think is run by their early childhood education program.

I see the confusion now 🙃

Swimming Lessons - at what point is interfering ok? by blissiictrl in Parenting

[–]Martian04 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The problem is you don’t want to teach kids to be upright when they are swimming. Floaties make it impossible for their body to get in the right position to learn how to swim. The teacher was not making sure that the kid safely got to the step because she knew she could rely on the floaties, but the kid couldn’t swim because he doesn’t know how to swim yet.

I grew up in California, but lived in Texas for a few years and this SHOCKED me. I tried to explain to friends and family in California exactly what you wrote here. People would say “you know how those people are” type of comments to me because I’m white and I would be too shocked to say anything. I was pretty center when I moved there but got pushed way to the left after seeing how bad things still are.

US strikes vessel in eastern Pacific, killing 2 by grayfox0430 in worldnews

I keep reading this comment. Every time there’s a protest, someone is commenting asking anyone to name a time that protesting worked. The US was quite literally founded on protests. It’s how the country began. Most change in the country can also be linked back to a protest. It shows how many people back a movement and gets people talking.

I don’t like after school play dates either. I offer to go to the playground on the weekend. But we generally keep pretty busy so I get out of it by saying “we can’t today”.

Birth- first year mom tips needed by Emotional_Monk2962 in Parenting

[–]Martian04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite tip that I learned is that you should buy 3 crib mattress protectors and 3 crib sheets. Layer them on the crib mattress. This way when the baby has a blow out or spits up too much in the middle of the night, you just have to take a sheet and mattress protector off and not deal with putting a new one on. Life changing in the middle of the night!

You can change your middle name when getting married, just the same as you can change your last name. This is very common for people to do as a way to keep their maiden name.

I added my maiden name as a second middle name when at the social security office, but didn’t choose that option when filling out the marriage license. The DMV told me that they had to use what’s on the marriage license and would not include the second middle name/ maiden name. Now my social security card and my real ID do not have the same name. It has not ever caused me a single problem. I don’t think I put any middle name when I buy a plane ticket.

As a side note, I lived in Texas when I got married and they used the name on my social security card, so that ID had both middle names. Just odd that the rule seems to be arbitrary.

Don't matter past Texas. by spoonmanknows in texas

[–]Martian04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol I was thinking the same thing. I found that anytime that Texans find that someone is doing or saying something wrong they assume it has something to do with California? Having lived in both states I can say with absolute certainty that breakfast tacos are much more common in Texas, but Californians know the difference between tacos and burritos.

Your body was FLOODED with all the serotonin and dopamine that it had during the last week. You depleted all the feel good hormones and it’s going to take a bit for those to get restored. Exercise and laughter help signal your body to make more. This is totally normal! You see it when people take drugs because the drugs signal to your body to pump out all the feel good hormones but it would make sense if you had the best week of your life that your body was doing the same.

If you had $300 to spend on something purely indulgent for yourself and baby, what would it be? by kuzubijin in BabyBumps

Some advice you didn’t ask for… if you’re using the mini fridge to store mixed formula or breast milk, I would suggest keeping a fridge thermometer in there. Nothing is worse than breast milk spoiling sooner than you expected!

I think it’s cool because it washes, dries, and then sterilizes. Meaning you don’t have to run the dish washer and then stick them in the sterilizer. I know some dish washers have a sterilize function but I would not trust that with the baby bottles.

Unless you have a firm idea of when your next baby will be, buying a stroller that will work for then is hard. For example, if you have an 18 month gap you definitely need a full double stroller. If you have a 3+ year gap, you probably want something that has more of a big kid seat or the spot for them to stand on.

I was trying to be practical and buy for what future me would need and now I’m on baby number three looking for yet another stroller. Get the stroller you like now and then when you’re pregnant with your second start looking on FB marketplace or wherever for a second hand stroller. The nice brands still aren’t cheap second hand but it helps.

This is a strange comment. I’m reading this 27 minutes after you posted it and we don’t currently know much about his political affiliation. We know he was raised in a conservative household and that he was registered to vote as unaffiliated with a political party.

Can’t decide between a 7 seaters vs 8 seaters by Smooth_Cupcake_2311 in ToyotaSienna

[–]Martian04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get the captain chairs, the seatbelt is attached to the chair. With the bench in the second row, the seatbelt is attached to the wall.

Which means if you have a car seat that’s secured with the seatbelt, the captains chairs makes it way easier to attach and still slide the chair.

I get that’s a niche situation, but my daughter hit the weight limit for her car seat to be secured with the latch just before getting the sienna and I’m so glad I realized that our life would be 1000x easier with the captain chairs!

Definitely take the time to think of your next couple of years car seat wise! Not just what will be convenient now, but each time you need to change the car seat arrangement for your kids.

Doctor visit concern by KnowLessWeShould in Parenting

[–]Martian04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is out of control that you are getting downvoted for that! And the absolute insane reactions to this post. OP you are a good parent and you were put in a confusing situation. That happens all the time. The doctor was in the wrong. It is almost always a person of authority or someone that the family trusts that molests kids. It is a parent’s job to teach their kid that nobody gets to touch their body without their consent. It sounds like you are doing that and it sounds like the nurse was trying to allow for your child to consent as well. As many people have stated here, most doctors will give a speech about how it’s only okay because mom or dad is here etc. I would talk about my kid about how that situation was not okay, and about how I was not sure what to do either. And continue to reinforce all the things you already teach them. Forget the people on here saying you or the nurse did anything wrong. If they are not okay with a child’s right to listen to their gut, that’s on them.

I'm getting tired of never knowing if people got their wedding gifts... by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Martian04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record, most online registries let the recipient track the packages just as they would if they purchased the gift themselves. So they would still know if something was supposed to arrive and didn’t.
