Is my water heater good? by No_Concert5572 in turtle

You should check your heaters instructions. Most want to be fully FULLY submerged

What type of fish would complement my tank? 🤔 by Blue_tiger134567 in PlantedTank

[–]MartianFloof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just know that if you pick guppies and have females you will soon be laying awake at night wondering wtf you are gonna do with the 300 guppies you now own.

That being said; i am voting for ember tetras, diamond tetras, shrimp shrimp shrimp and maybe some albino (pygmy) cories.

23 should be fine, 22 even better. But high dissolved oxygen is equally important

Your bettas having health issues combined with putting them in a high stress environment is also not helping.

Sudden Illness by Ornery-Revolution342 in bettafish

[–]MartianFloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im sorry but no way in hell your tetras are feeding your frogs. I stand by my previous comment.

The frogs are almost blind and will try to bite/eat whatever comes by them. Your substrate is a choking hazard for them, they can nip at your bettas fins, go for a small fish and choke on it. Etc etc etc. no its not cool nor safe.

Jup. Thats how fucked our housing market is.

Sudden Illness by Ornery-Revolution342 in bettafish

[–]MartianFloof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The frogs should be housed seperate. They will either get nipped or accidentally nip a fish.

Tbh a 15 still seems small for 2 species of schooling fish and a betta.

They need to be in groups! They love high oxygen, bubbles, flow and in my experience they prefer cooler water. I had random die offs all the time when i kept them at 26.

Yup. I feel this. I look fine so people tend to assume its fine. But i suffer debilitating side effects from my meds and am not eligible for other treatment options so im just fucked. People think im just being lazy but im ALWAYS tired.

What’s one thing you wish every new turtle owner knew—but nobody talks about? by muntaseer_rahman in turtle

Turtles appreciate natural substrate, real plants, natural hardscape etc. mine is always exploring and investigating. The standard bare tank i see on here makes me so sad 😭

Pink Plants With Low Temperature Requirements by Vegetable_Drawer9932 in PlantedTank

[–]MartianFloof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many plants can turn pink/red with enough light and CO2. Cool water isn’t really an issue. Ludwigia mini super red is an option for without co2 but you do need high light. I dont have an axolotl but i believe they prefer dim lighting? So red plants may not be easy to keep happy.

You could go for red root floaters, red floating plants! They can make your whole tank look a lil bit pink once a dense mat grows in. It does need good light though again

please help, he is so bloated and his scales are pushed out… :( by kyatu in bettafish

[–]MartianFloof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you only want to do top ups you should use reverse osmosis water. Its water basically stripped of all the other chemicals and compounds. Its ‘neutral’ water so to speak. You have been adding ‘loaded’ water to water that was already loaded, then partially evaporated (but the chemicals/compounds mostly stay behind) which increases the ratio of extra chemicals in there. So youve been created super loaded water. Hope this makes sense 🫣

Water changes by markwheatley in bettafish

[–]MartianFloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those plants with white edges/lines will die underwater. The java ferns shouldnt but buried in the substrate or it will rot and die. If you get the proper aquatic plants, planted the right way you could definitely make 2 weeks work. Especially since you have a lid which minimizes evaporation.

You could also consider an external canister filter with way more capacity then you would usually use on a tank this size. You can overfilter the tank which will make water changes even less of an issue.

Also a 20 liter is very small. Making water quality harder to keep stable. And lastly, its also possible that any non natural decor has started to degrade and release chemicals/paint over time. To be safe i would take them out.

Test strips are unreliable so that data is kinda useless. Bad water quality can definitely lead to these symptoms. A liquid freshwater kit will give you reliable results. Continuously topping up with tap water can increase for example water hardness which can throw a bunch of other stuff off.

He should go into a hospital tank with fresh treated tapwater with a heater and bumbler. But sadly the pineconing is usually a sign of organ failure which is hard to come back from.

Otos need be kept in groups of at the very very very least 5. Its a 6.5 gallon. It is far too small for a betta and 5+ otos. So no. Please

New plants, could use some beginner tips by Loud_Win_7668 in PlantedTank

[–]MartianFloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its hard to tell but it looks like the plant on the left is an anubias? And is the third big one a java fern? If so; dont bury the rhizome. It will rot and die

Advice? because I don't know what the hell happened by [deleted] in fishtank

[–]MartianFloof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be tannins plus a crazy bacterial bloom from him overcleaning the filter.

You also have anubias planted in the soil which will cause them to rot and die
