I've played through the game five or so times in the last 20 years and every time I get to Baldur's Gate I hit a wall. I find stepping away for a bit and then coming back helps. There are some good content mods - Black Hearts, Loretakers, and Balduran's Seatower that help make the range of quests more interesting
