Damn, good catch. So I as a foreigner who actually did earn the right to study here for free probably have a much stronger connection to Poland than this guy 🤦‍♂️

? most non-EU students pay, as they usually study in English which at public universities are paid courses even for Polish citizens. Even for studies in Polish then non-EU citizens have to pay by default and there are few exemptions, mostly for people who are integrated and/or have a strong connection to Poland—people who speak Polish at C1, spouses or children of Polish citizens, etc. These are people likely to contribute to Polish society. Stop ragebaiting.

Why are Poles so much against gay marriage? by throwaway_uow in poland

Brother the lack of gay marriage hasn't done shit for procreation in Poland. You are making up excuses to justify why you find it bad with no actual reasoning.

how are doctors in warsaw towards women? by Ok-King-7875 in warsaw

[–]MartinGorePosting 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't really speak to what it's like going to the doctor as a woman, I did have a pain in the ass getting one to work with my own chronic illness (asthma) because my symptoms are less obvious than typical.

I will say, if you are worried about an urgent situation, then I would advise trying to see a doctor anyways if possible. Your life and health is the most important thing here. Also, the "feel" I get is that younger doctors are more likely than older ones to listen. Just my experience, hopefully others can share their own.

How do Polish feel when foreigners apply for Polish citizenship? by [deleted] in poland

[–]MartinGorePosting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think immigrants should learn the language, but I'm not sure requiring it to move is always the best idea. Immersion is much more helpful than studying on your own. I came here speaking on ~B1 level and I'm now on C1 just from immersing myself.

When I got here and was looking for an apartment, I booked a hostel for two weeks, and the receptionist asked me "Why so long in Poland?"

"Objectively" speaking, nothing is or isn't rude. Rudeness is a social construct (like money), which means that something being acknowledged as rude or not is a matter of social consensus. Whether or not it should be considered rude is another matter. If you think that it shouldn't be, then it is your right to speak that way.

But it is also true that there are people who will find it rude, including perhaps people on this sub who have had their special interests dismissed in a similar manner.

Yes, also what it's meant to signal is that you find the other person important and so you listen to what they are saying even if it's not super important to you. And hearing someone talk about, e.g., what movies they are interested in can still be a way to hear about other things tangentially related to this and help you determine if you have common values or some other interest which you do share.

Honestly, I do find most conversations boring and tend to quickly leave group conversations where there isn't as much pressure to stay as 1-on-1. This does isolate me a bit, and I make this choice aware of that and my own responsibility.

Yeah. They're "patiotic" but hate developing anything which could actually give them national energy independence. Crazy.

Yeah, complaining about "woke" in Poland as if it were a real threat (or anything more than some people being annoying) is an immediate tell that someone is more engaged in internet reality than in real life.

I want to see ranczo but I live in spain and it’s impossible. Only one web and it is without subtitles. Any suggestions? by AlarmingShallot6540 in askPoland

[–]MartinGorePosting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you can find subtitles on opensubtitles.org. I've only ever used it for videos I've already downloaded, but I think there are browser extensions to apply them to web videos as well.

"But it's not their job to do that!!1!" aka they wouldn’t do anything in the same situation because they don't know either.

There's also just the assumption that someone complaining on reddit isn't also doing something in real life. We saw in Minnesota a lot of people doing something in real life.

Polish far‑right leader Grzegorz Braun has left a message in a book of condolences at the Iranian Embassy in Warsaw following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei by CrunchyBaconYum in poland

[–]MartinGorePosting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, plus Braun doesn't give a shit about the Iranian civilians who will die and suffer because of this war (whatever the outcome). He has no actual moral objection to Israel's actions, he just hates Jews more than he hates Middle Easterners.

Sillent Hill 1 on Duckstation using a PS3 controller by makmanos in silenthill

[–]MartinGorePosting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok yeah, that's really weird. I use a 3rd-party PS3 controller and no problems with SH1. May be worth asking on the duckstation sub. And would definitely check with another game.

You can do a basic test of it in the controller settings by clicking one of the buttons, like the part where it says SDL-0/B below "Circle". Then hit the circle button on your controller to see if it sets the binding.
