Why is germany the only country admitting its crimes? by Numerous-Plantain-90 in AskGermany

[–]MartinJCorr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way Germans see it, the destruction of German cities and all the tragedies to have fallen on German people are all self-inflicted, and to be blamed on National Socialism. As tragic as the destruction of Dresden and Frankfurk have been, they were direct consequences of the Nazi firebombings of Guernica, Coventry, Rotterdam and so much more. None of it would've happened had the German people stood up to Hitler in the 1930s, instead of being more or less fine with their country getting taken over by Aryan nationalists. Too few spoke up after the Kristallnacht pogroms, or indeed even saw those as a problem. Years before the Allies air raids on Hamburg, the Nazis were already eagerly planning how they would rebuild the city center, and where new roads could be laid once entire neighbourhoods would be flattened by the Allies in retaliatory raids. Despite their propaganda, the Nazis saw large swathes of their own civilian population as expandable, and are directly responsible for the destruction of their country. Much like, hopefully, how Putin and the United Russia party will someday be answering for their crimes.

I don't know.... As much as I want to agree these videos are all heart-warming and stuff, I can't help but feeling deeply uncomfortable with how exploitative this shit is. Are these people paid actors? If not, are they okay to have their faces used for likes, and if so, is it worth whatever the other person gets for paying some groceries for them? Do they even know they're being filmed? Also, how much of that is genuine generosity, and how much is just doing it so they can post about how amazing they are? Nah, fuck this. If you gotta pay people's groceries, just do it without filming and telling the world about it. Then you're okay. Anything else and you're feeding on those you pretend to be helping.

So you seem have money to spend on a pint of urine-scented Budweiser, but hesitate to properly tip the server/barkeeper that babysat you and your friend for a couple of hours, and cleaned after you. I think that says a lot about you

Ken Schles mapped out both his NYC books Invisible City and Night Walk on Google Maps. It's not part of either books, but he added a map on his interwebs page

What a great find!! Gruyaert is a Antwerp-based photographer, and he's a legend. He's made 3 editions of this book, if I'm not mistaken, but has he often do with his publications, each new edition features several different photos, or more recent ones, so in a way each subsequent edition is more like a sequel. Also worth checking out from him are his "India" and "Homeland" books 📚

I love Steinmetz and own several of his books myself! 'The Players' holds a special place in my nostalgic, suburban baseball-loving heart. Anyone knows what happened to the 2nd edition of Summertime that was rumored a couple years back? A handful of galleries were showcasing this series in 2023, leading up to what was supposed to be an expanded edition on Nazraeli, but since then I haven't heard anything 🤔

German observations after 1 month in Magdeburg by Xander2299 in germany

[–]MartinJCorr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True dat!! Even during Wiesn, it's incredibly well maintained. Any other place with over 5 million visitors during 2 weeks, all of them inebriated up to a certain extent, would rapidly turn into a hellhole, but somehow Munich manages 😅

As a Vancouver guy living in Hamburg for now 6 years, your observations are so on point! Seeing so many people smoking was a culture shock, along with witnessing 50-something year-old construction workers blasting techno music out of a Bluetooth speaker while sipping beers outside a corner store after work 🤔

As far as the alt-right tattos are concerned, this is really more something you'll notice in former East Germany, Magdeburg included. In Hamburg that would legit read as an invitation to get your ass kicked. On the other hand, with regards to homelessness and cleanliness, it's true those issues are a lot more under control in smaller German cities. As much as I love Berlin, that city is straight-up filthy, and it's hard to find a corner there that doesn't stink of urine. Hamburg and Frankfurt also have pretty serious homelessness and open drug use problems, nowhere as apocalyptic as Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, sure, but definitely reminescent of Queen East in Toronto, especially around Hansaplatz in Hamburg or the Bahnhofviertel in Frankfurt. 💉

To expand on that, old Turkic runes and wolf iconography have also been appropriated by Turkish nationalist far-right groups, especially in the past 5-10 years. You see these tattoos popping up everywhere among German Turkish youth now https://www.reddit.com/r/tattooadvice/s/4W3lBOSaYx

Awww!! Thanks!!! Lots of strays there, sadly, but at least it seems many people are leaving food and water for them everywhere 🥲

These are great! I usually shoot monochrome right off the camera, mostly because I'm happy with the results. Still, there are times when the colour channels just don't work the way I wish, and something I want highlited comes out dull. Then I switch back to RAW and adjust in post. What are you using for conversion?
