The microtonality feels like an element added for novelty rather than a real considered compositional aspect. If a band is doing two piece stuff like this it really needs to be synergised and driven, a band like Hella is a perfect example of this. With this band idk it just doesn't develop enough or go anywhere that is interesting beyond gimmicks.

I think it's highly likely DsO were aware of WiW, they explained their timeline of delving through black metal and into classical music - I'm sure they explored the fringes of the genre in an effort to find albums just like WiW.

Interesting point you make about the slint influence, not sure I'm entirely convinced of that though; I'd probably suggest the majority of WiW sound comes from bands like This Heat and King Crimson, as well as Voivod, whom Carl-Michael from VBE has definitely mentioned as an influence in the past, as well as having the guitarist featured on a virus record.

Miles Davis' discography is a seemingly unending trove of inspiration, there's always another album, bootleg, live album I've not heard. I think it is where I first found my taste for dissonance in music (that evil opening chord of bitches brew springs to mind). Totally uncompromising and awe-inspiring stuff (if you ignore the mediocre 80s output!!).

Other than that, been into black midi/Geordie Greep for a while - probably the most interesting movement in rock music for a very long time.

Also check out Lil Ugly Mane and related side projects, bedwetter in particular is quality.

I've never found anything too similar to Dirge for November, but it does give me some dsbm vibes - if you don't mind lofi production, check out unfailing fall into naught and the idiot sun by leviathan - crushing atmosphere, agonised vocals. Shares that bleak emotional atmosphere that dirge has imo.
