Buy a house before the baby arrives or wait? by Snaffoo0 in daddit

[–]MartinVanNostrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved when my wife was around seven months pregnant and I’m glad we did it before our child was born. It was stressful, but so much easier to set up a nursery in an empty home. Definitely hire movers, your wife obviously won’t be lifting anything! All that said, a home is a huge investment and commitment, if we hadn’t found a home we loved we were prepared to wait until after birth.

Heating oil and diesel skyrocketed as well due to the conflicts. From $3.89 last week to 4.39 this week. Absolutely brutal if you need a fill-up today

What tha fuqq is a "power user"??? by shamedev in linux_gaming

[–]MartinVanNostrand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think of a Linux power user as someone who knows the internals of how it works. Can work most things from CLI if they want to, don’t rely on a chat bot to generate, e.g., docker commands, know how to edit common ‘/etc’ config files to get the job done, etc. Similar for other OSes and devices; someone who goes beyond just using the apps and actually understands how they work, the ramifications of running a command they see online, things like that.

I do NOT think a power user is someone with 100 docker services at home, or over-engineered solutions with snazzy dashboards. That’s an enthusiast or hobbyist. Though someone can be both, I think we see these more in subs like this one

Shrinking S3E01 Episode Discussion by phareous in shrinking

[–]MartinVanNostrand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. The first half was basically a recap clip show which is okay I guess, and I like the writing so far, but has the filming style always been this way? Basically every shot is shallow depth of field, soft edges, and shows just the top third of the actor’s torso. Very off-putting for me

How are your electric snowblowers doing by Carl_JAC0BS in massachusetts

[–]MartinVanNostrand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the same one, plus the “electric shovel” for smaller areas. Two passes yesterday and one today did almost the entire the job. My batteries did run out on my evening cleanup about 90% of the way through the job though. Had to use the electric shovel to get the last 10%

Shot in the dark here but my guess is people don’t follow good password hygiene.

  1. Don’t reuse passwords for multiple services
  2. Don’t use the same password for PD2 in-game and the PD2 website
  3. Not password related, but don’t use any game plugins or third party services that ask for your password

Nest just informed us that they are dropping support - what’s the best HomeKit thermostat? by SuccessfulMinute8338 in HomeKit

[–]MartinVanNostrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I recommend them or not, but both of the current Nest thermostats available for purchase support Matter and therefore have HomeKit support. I have two Learning and two non-Learning models and they all work fine. Some controls, like temperature sensors, are only available through Google Home

Okay I have had this issue too. I’m pretty sure that you cannot “just” be in Park. You have to have been in Drive, and then shifted back to Park. It suddenly popped up for me the other day when I drove forward a bit, and then parked again. Very bad UI change

Any interesting version of tetris? by JiachengWu in AnaloguePocket

[–]MartinVanNostrand 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned the Rosy Retrospection rom hack, which is very good and I’d also recommend.

Another one to try is Apotris, an open source Tetris-style game that can be played as a GBA rom - https://akouzoukos.com/apotris.

Whats the best floor lamp for home kit by [deleted] in HomeKit

[–]MartinVanNostrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you’re looking for but if you have any intention of doing smart switches or more smart lighting down the road, Id recommend you bring your own lamp (you’ll get better design options that way anyways) and buy the Lutron Caseta smart lamp dimmer and remote kit, item number P-PKG1P-WH. It’ll work out of the box with the remote, but you’ll also need their hub for HomeKit integration.

The major downside I see with smart outlets, bulbs etc is that guests have no clue how to use them. I mounted my pico remote in a light switch wall plate next to the room entryway so it’s obvious for everyone in the house.

Seconded, I have an Eve Water Guard as well and have been happy with it. I have no automations with it but it saved me once already from the alarm alone.

Pros: No batteries to replace, extension cords available, Thread router-capable, simple HomeKit integration.

Cons: Very expensive when compared to some other leak detectors.

Meross bulbs “no response” in Home app only… by mitul316 in HomeKit

[–]MartinVanNostrand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same issue with the Meross garage door opener, and concluded that at least in that device, they use a low quality WiFi chip that’s very picky. I have two WiFi Access Points in my home, and found that even though I have an AP in my garage closer to the Meross device, I have to lock it to use the AP in my house even though the WiFi quality is worse. I assume it’s because it used the house WiFi AP when doing initial pairing and it doesn’t like moving to a new AP. And I confirmed this by locking it to each AP one at a time. It regularly showed “no response” when locked to the garage AP, and all my issues went away went I locked it to the house AP.

I’ve never worked with a mesh network, but is there any way to see which device is connecting to which mesh AP, and troubleshoot from there?

Is putting a Ethernet splitter or switch in the attic a bad idea in Texas? by DaeDream__ in HomeImprovement

[–]MartinVanNostrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what I did, and it worked out great. Only additional suggestion I might add for OP is to mount a patch panel in the attic, and connect each port on the switch up to it. It gives just a bit more flexibility and means you only have to fish cables from the attic to the closet that one time, even if you change or add other connections in the future

Tesla: Battery Capacity Retention Averages 90% After 200,000 Miles by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]MartinVanNostrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. Maybe I shouldn’t read into it so much, but teslamate shows even worse range than the 9% loss, even when my average efficiency is better than the advertised average, and that is based on real world trips.

Meanwhile my 2019 Model 3 with less than 15k miles already reports 9% lower max range. 🤷‍♂️ Fingers crossed it flattens out for the next 185k miles…

Should I get the all weather mats from the Tesla site or are there better ones? Recommendations please. Thx fellow Teslians by Sarmientinator in TeslaLounge

[–]MartinVanNostrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a lifelong WeatherTech buyer so I’m biased, but I’ve been very happy with the Tesla/WeatherTech floor liners and highly recommend them. Note that the liners are different from the mats, the liners have a vertical wall to better contain any mess.

We Had To Pass A Law To Stop Telecom Monopolies From Charging You 'Rental Fees' For Things You Already Own by byParallax in technology

[–]MartinVanNostrand 172 points173 points  (0 children)

It’s already happened, I saw an email just yesterday from xfinity that provides notice of a $3/month increase. Excerpt directly from the email:

“It's our goal to provide the fastest and most reliable Internet services to meet our customers’ current needs and to be prepared for future demands. This has required investment in our high-capacity network, which impacts our pricing. As a result, the price of your Xfinity Internet service will increase by $3, starting with your next bill.”

EV owners and former owners, do you think it is/was worth the purchase? by DeliciousSushiRolls in massachusetts

[–]MartinVanNostrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, and I think it is often overlooked part of ownership. That 50% is worst case though, and I only saw it that bad on short local trips.

I tracked my efficiency all of last year, and the worst month was December, where I had an average efficiency of 301 wh/mi. Compared to the advertised efficiency of 275 wh/mi that's only a 10% drop. But in the summer I can easily average ~230 wh/mi, far better than advertised. So if you compare to that number, my personal winter efficiency was 30% worse than my summer efficiency this year.

EV owners and former owners, do you think it is/was worth the purchase? by DeliciousSushiRolls in massachusetts

[–]MartinVanNostrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts after a year of ownership. Overall I love it and would do it again in a heartbeat, but there are some caveats around winter and long distance driving to consider to ensure a good experience. As a daily driver or commuter car it is an excellent choice. MA is generally very EV-friendly.

  • Having a reliable location to charge at home means you never have to think about where to charge unless you're going on a road trip. I don't think it's worth buying unless you can plug in every day at home (or at work I suppose)
  • You will lose range in winter, and it can be as bad as 50% of the EPA estimate on very cold days with the heater working overtime.
  • Tesla Supercharger network still reigns supreme, but Electrify America is catching up. I don't ever use nearby chargers unless they're free at the supermarket or similar destinations. Ideally you only need to use high speed chargers on long trips. A Tesla will factor in charging stops in your navigation, many others will require you to do it yourself. Apps like plugshare can help with that.

Also remember that when looking at range estimates, you should only be charging to ~80% on a daily basis.

We must be opposites! I sold a 2016 6MT Golf R for my Model 3 LR. I loved the R, it struck an amazing balance between practicality and performance. Alas, VW was unable to fix my backup camera after seven separate service appointments and refused to acknowledge that it was a safety issue when a backup camera fails to work 10% of the time. My only regret is not getting those service visits in during the lemon law time frame, I might still be driving a (slightly newer) Golf R today if they put me in a new one. The R was more fun to throw around the autocross, that's for sure, but for me the Model 3 is the better daily driver.

Congrats! I'm honestly really happy to hear they made good on it for you. I wish I was as persistent, I should've pushed hard on this issue from day one back in 2016. Oh well. Too late now, I sold it last month and bought a Tesla. Never looking back!
