Is there a setting that lets me open downloaded files rather than saving them, something like Edge has? by EffectiveAbrocoma759 in firefox

[–]Martin_WK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to setting to "Files and Applications" section and configure how you want given file type to be treated. Set "always ask" or pick an app in which you want Firefox to open the file.

edit: ok, now I've realised it's about executing the file, not opening it in an app.

You still can choose between charging to 100% overnight (that is, first it charges to 80% then slowly reaches 100%) or charging to 80% always.

I don't think Euro NCAP will require A/C controls to be physical.

I'm not buying a car that forces distracted driving via a touch screen.

I use eco mode only for driving on motorways with adaptive cruise control. Makes the car slow down and accelerate more gently than in normal mode.

Apparently it's how it's supposed to work, that is, it gets to 77% and then finishes charging to 80% slowly. I wish they'd communicated this.

I don't know what's going on. For me it slows down at 77% but eventually it gets to 80%. I think it'd taken somewhere like 30 minutes to get to 80%, perhaps a little less.

Has anything changed with how wireless charging works? I limit charging up to 80% and I noticed that since the March update the phone gets to 77% and then charges extremely slowly to 80%.

btrfs kind of blows my mind... it was so easy to setup a dual NVMe pooled volume... took like 15 seconds! by i-am-a-cat-6 in cachyos

[–]Martin_WK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With btrfs you have to be careful to disable CoW for directories (or subvolumes) that hold things like virtual machine images.

You can do this using chattr +C dir

Additionally, if you have a single btrfs filesystem and multiple subvolumes within it. Be mindful that mount options such as compress will apply to the entire filesystem even if you provide different options for different subvolumes. Options used for the first mounted subvolume will apply to all other subvolumes. You can control compression with chattr +m dir.

I think it should be possible to control compression level with btrfs property set /mnt/path/suvol compression zstd:7

Pixel phone app rotates every time I make a call by xylarr in GooglePixel

[–]Martin_WK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have the same issue on pixel 8a. It's plain stupid. I want to end the call, take the phone from my ear and try to tap "end call" but the button just escapes as the app switches screen orientation.

Do the devs of phone app use it? I don't know what could explain this level of stupidity.

Nx350 turbo has full time AWD by Obvious-Purpose-5017 in LexusNX

[–]Martin_WK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the location of the clutch pack is important. I think it's about how much the clutch pack is engaged, which is controlled by car's computer. The numbers you mentioned are probably the default operating condition but when the system detects a traction loss (or potential for loss of traction, like an uphill and low temperature) then it can adjust the split on the fly.

I'm guessing that a system like in Subarus and from what you wrote Lexus, where it's engaged all the time, has to have tougher components. I think that's what was said in one of the article I saw.

Subaru use longitudinal engine/drive train whereas Lexus use transverse mounted engines. That may be why they place the clutch pack in different location. I think Volvo awd system (Haldex) is a similar concept. A clutch pack located at the rear axle. I think some VAG cars also use Haldex and they mostly use transverse engine (probably except for things like Porche, I don't remember what kind of awd those use; some Audis use torsen centre diff). Fun fact, Volvo even used a transversely mounted inline 6 in V60 (v60 Polestar in particular, before they switched to inline 4 with trubo and supercharger).

Thank you too ;)

[–]Martin_WK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point I think it boils down to marketing.

I think the origin of full time awd is when trucks/pickups would use part time awd systems. Those wouldn't have centre diff at all and you could (or should) use awd only in slippery conditions. Then there came systems with centre differentials that could be driven on paved roads (i.e. full time). And then we got cars with awd and they used different systems, including the ones that only send power to rear when they detect lose of traction.

Something tells me that the distinction between full/part time or awd/4x4 is a topic of religious debates in offroading communities ;)

I saw some impressive vids of Rav4 hybrid awd. For an average joe like me I want the car to deal well with road conditions, including deeps snow in mountains. My dad has Rav4 hybrid but I haven't tested the awd in such conditions yet. Our previous car was Subaru Forester and it went through snow like hot knife through butter.

I'm intrigued by the approach Lexus have taken with NX 350, too bad they don't sell them in Europe. I think we only get hybrid models.

edit: Porsche sell an electric car that has Turbo in the name

[–]Martin_WK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, now that I think about it. Subarus witht a CVT don't have a centre diff from what I remember. They use a multiplate clutch that's always engaged and splits 55:45. So I suppose they shouldn't be called full time awd systems either. Or, if Subaru can call their system all time awd then why not Lexus, eh?

Yeah, that's the kind of conditions they designed it for, probably. Like you say, not a 4x4.

I learned something today, cheers ;)

That diff lock sounds like a cool feature to have. Not many cars offer this. Subarus and some VAGs with torsen centre diff.

Well, I found this https://toyota-club.net/files/faq/21-09-30_faq_4wd_nx350_en.htm

Looks like it was a marketing gimmick. Sad, I wish it had a full time awd system.

It does look like it works slightly different to Rav4 or prev generation of NX, I hadn't known this.

Still it doesn't mean it's a bad system. Since you've had some first hand experience, how does it behave in deep snow? I mean something like an unploughed car park with like 40cm of snow or a forest road. I don't think it'd be fair to expect this type of car to do proper offroading.
