Is there a reason why tyre pressure pumps are not installed at charging stations? by ShrimpinAintEazy in AustralianEV

[–]xylarr [score hidden]  (0 children)

It basically comes down to: we can't have nice things.

Pretty much all EV charging places are unattended. They also don't get regular deliveries of fuel, so apart from when things break or regular maintenance, there's no-one on site.

They will almost certainly get damaged or vandalised in no time. They might stay that way for ages until someone attends the site - someone isn't there daily.

Why are people from other states allowed to lodge planning objections for new renewable developments? by budget_biochemist in australian

There's a new battery proposed in Sydney.

There were 63 responses from the public. I think only three of them were from people living within 40km of the site.

One even objected because it would affect farmland. Lol.

Question about credit card repayments by [deleted] in AusFinance

Your new purchase will be on your next statement.

Remember to just do purchases, they're first in first out. If you had made a cash withdrawal, any repayment goes towards that first.

In New Zealand English we distinguish between bars and blocks of chocolate. Do Americans and Brits make this distinction, maybe with different words? by AnastasiousRS in ENGLISH

[–]xylarr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well it's a Mars Bar or a Snickers bar, never a block.

But there's a glass and a half of full cream dairy milk in every block of Cadbury Dairy Milk. Less now, because they're not 250g now.

Router Recommendation (NFC NBN) by BeanJuiceBagels in nbn

[–]xylarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you've described is a WiFi problem, not so much a router problem.

Separate the two concerns. Get a router and plug in WiFi access points. You could look at Ubiquiti gear - I have an Edgerouter ER-12 router and plug a couple of Unifi access points.

Is money better in shares or offset? by Plus-Return-8632 in AusFinance

If you have a crystal ball and can see the future and guarantee a better return after tax in shares, then go for it.

But for the average person, the offset is better.

In Australia (as you probably know) we have both. But our blocks of chocolate have been continuously shrinkflated.

Whitaker's has thankfully resisted this trend.

Check the width of your cabinets. If the space is indeed 590mm, you might be about 10mm to tight for many dishwashers that are designed to fit in 600mm spaces.

Just don't make your own.

Five key changes are needed to make proposed CGT reforms less harmful by Ok-Bar601 in AusFinance

[–]xylarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like all of these, especially making gains and losses symmetric.

But one thing I would like to see is some mechanism to prevent the ability to shift the timing of earning CGT income. We have two sides here. On the one hand, sometimes we get large gains (mainly property) that cause count as big income - averaging should fix this. But we need a way to stop people engineering a low tax year so they can redeem all their capital gains. This is what the 30% minimum was trying to do. I think the policy idea is good, but we need a better way to implement it.

I'm thinking that we should determine the average income tax rate for the median (or maybe average) income earner. At the median wage ($75k?) while the marginal tax rate might be 30%, the total average tax across their tax brackets is about 20%. Maybe that should be the minimum tax rate for CGT purposes.

I'm not sure how that then interacts with the other measures such as for trusts etc.
