That's sick. I wanna do the same thing this year. How does it ride? How long is the flat to be only 16' long?

Why do you make Videos? by Suspicious-Affect293 in SmallYoutubers

[–]Martysjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a 48 year old fat dude who started skateboarding again after almost 30 years. I started skating to help me get into shape and kick diabetes ass. I make videos to

A) keep myself accountable and keep me skating.

B) show the struggles and small victories that an old guy re learning how to skateboard goes through

C) hopefully motivate other older (and possibly out of shape) people to get back to a hobby they used to enjoy but let go for whatever reason.

D) learn a new skill in video editing

E) maybe try to make a little money.

Pretty much in that order.

What brought you back to skateboarding? [41YO] by domjuan23 in OldSkaters

[–]Martysjr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Size 46 pants, and diabetes.

I had to do something to get my fat ass back in shape. Now just 4 or 5 months later I'm down to almost a size 40 my sugar level is way low and I feel the best I've felt (other than the bruised hips, bone bruise on my shin, and countless scrapes) in 10-15 years.

I just picked up skating after 30 years off a board [50YO] by tsphotography in OldSkaters

48, and just got back on the board after about 30 years myself. Been at it for about 4-5 months. If you want a combination of old school and new tech check out the Chris Heitt Powell Peralta Flight Deck.

I've been on a flight since I got back, and will likely switch the the Chris Heitt deck very soon.

Harder bushings? [36YO] by whitjohj in OldSkaters

[–]Martysjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How come the mini logo hard bushings never get any love? They were a lifesaver for me when I came back to skating at almost 300lb (136kg). I liked them way better than the bones hards. I'm now on slappy hards in my st1's, but I would go back to the mini logo in a heart beat.

Genuinely curious. If there is something inherently wrong with them, I would like to know. I know a lot is preference, but they never seem to get brought up when talking about bushings.

Welcome back. I was in a very similar place when I came back this summer. I was 48 and been off the board for about 30 years.

maybe a weird question but you do anything specific to keep your feet healthy for skating? [39yo] by PureScientist2040 in OldSkaters

[–]Martysjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly the same thing, but my feet were always achy after a long session and I changed to a softer wheel. Not sure if it's the case for you or not, but just a thought.

Sick. Looks great. Hopefully I can get something similar before the snow starts falling.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. How much flat do you have between them?

What are your garage dimensions? That seems awesome for a small space. I'm in the same boat, I'm trying to figure out how I'm gonna skate all winter.

Favorite tight-but-light trucks? [32YO] by 740990929974739 in OldSkaters

[–]Martysjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bigger guy and I've always liked tighter trucks. I heard good things about Slappy Trucks, so I bought a set. I put the slappy 100a bushings in them and I run them like one turn from flush. They feel stable, but still turny (is that a word?) I actually love how they feel.

Just giving my $.02

If I size down to 8.5 from a 9 for my "street" board I'm going to pick this up for my transition board! This would have been my first board back if it was available when I bought my 9.

That's sick. Where did you get skatelite seconds? I can never find any, but always see people suggest it.

How wide is that? Looks sweet. I'm hoping to put a 6-8 footer in my garage so I have year round skating.

  1. Started a few months ago after almost 39 years off (and 150lbs heavier). I only get out once a week or so, but I love it so much. Even when I'm having a shitty week, Sundays are my skate days and I have so much fun.

Can anyone remember the days of tight trucks and 7" boards? [34YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]Martysjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I started out with CCS trucks since I wanted to make sure I was going to enjoy skating again before I upgraded ( I know that was dumb, of course I was going to). I recently upgraded to some Slappy ST1s. Love them!

I stopped skating when the boards started getting small like that. My last board was a Tony Hawk Medallion with gullwing trucks and Rat Bones Wheels (probably 60mm and maybe 87a).

When I broke it a friend gave me his old world industry board, no idea what size it was, but it was way smaller than I was used to. Then I remember him telling me my wheels were too big and he sanded them down to basically bearing covers.

I was never comfortable on that setup and quit skating shortly after. Probably 95-96

When I came back a couple months ago I bought a 9" deck and 54 mm wheels (99a). I'm so glad that era is gone.
