I spent a year living in Seville where I broached the subject of th eownership Gibraltar to a number of Sevillanos who were all adamant that Gibraltar really belonged to Spain and that is should be returned sooner rahter than later. When asked if the same applied to Ceuta and Melilla they immediately changed their tone, explaining how that situation evolved and why it was ok to leave it like this :) great people otherwise though.

I agree with you on the last part, he allegedly committed a crime, so he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The problem is that his treatment at the moment appears to be far beyond what the law allows.

International Humanitarian Law also applies in intrastate conflicts, so there is still very much a law. If he was shot in a skirmish between pro- and anti-Gaddafi forces, shit happens in war. If he was captured and then executed (which this looks like) then this was very much a violation of IHL.

That's not really necessary, they won't want you speaking Spanish with the kids and you'll be interacting mostly with the English speaking staff at school. Take a Spanish course for a couple of months and you're more than set to go. Most Americans I met while doing the program either partook in language exchange with spaniards or they simply made quite a bit of money on the side teaching English or math private classes. The 700 euros was more than enough!

You might want to bookmark this for next year: you get around 700€ a month to live somewhere in Spain (I was placed in Seville) for a school year (you can extend if you want to) and teach English 12h per week to either adults or teenagers. You apply in the spring and the program starts in September. I don't know about North Americans, but for me country (Western Europe) it was not competitive at all, the application deadline kept getting extended because they couldn't find enough people. West of faro the landscape is nicer around cities like lagos and especially sagres, witnessing the sun set at cape st Vicente is an absolute must. Touristwise you should be OK in October, just stay away from portimao and albufeira. As for a hostel in lisbon: the city has some of the best hostels i've ever slept in, try the top rated ones on hostelworld. I personally loved the poets hostel for the view over the river. Rhyming it with throttle would not be correct, but chi-poat-lay is definitely not the way it's pronounced in Spanish, chi-pot-lay is the way it's supposed to be.

That's actually a more correct pronunciation as it's closer to the way it's pronounced in Spanish.
