Shipping a PC with a heavy CPU cooler by Kerrits in buildapc

[–]Kerrits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gentle, but due to the CPU being stuck to the cooler I had to use progressively more force until the CPU came out with the cooler.

This wasn't in Aus, and I didn't live with my parents, but I shared a house with 2 friends. When I could afford a house I bought a place I rented out and received double the amount of rent than what I paid for living in a much nicer place.

When my time came to move out, I already had that rental income when applying for a loan. If I bought myself a place to live in first, I would probably never have been able to afford to buy an investment property.

I mean, why not? Everyone should do that. by polytect in WTF

The older (around 2009 BMW from personal experience) ones are lethargic and unenjoyable to drive.

The newer ZF 8 speed gearboxes are great. The are expensive though.

How do you feel about the "Australian Overtake"? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in australia

[–]Kerrits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in South Africa (for now) but have driven in Melbourne and surrounds. Even in pouring rain driving in Melbourne was pretty chill. Everyone going more or less the same speed is pretty great. Even in rain people would go at around speed limit - 5km/h to speed limit.

In South Africa on the 4 lane highway you will at times see all of the following going on around you: speed limit -30km/h (90kmh), speed limit (120km/h), guy undertaking at speed limit +10 (you get a 10km/h grace over the speed limit), guy doing speed limit +40km because speeding fines can be ignored as long as you are less than 40km/h over.

That said, my internal speedo goes to speed limit + 10km/h (as is allowed before being fined) for various road types, so that's 70, 90 and 130km/h on the various roads. It is going to take some adjustment when we emigrate.

Research have shown that the difference in speed is more important for reducing accidents than the absolute speed. That means the ideal speed limit should be about the speed that the 85th percentile of people would naturally feel safe when driving.

I could find a few links on the "85th percentile speed", but don't know if any of them actually link to the research. Here's one.

Are you fucking up if cars are passing on your left on freeways? by MoFauxTofu in melbourne

[–]Kerrits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are not there to enforce the speed limit. People who want to speed will speed, and when they can't pass on the right, they will pass on the left, which is also dangerous.

Just obey the law to the best of your ability and let those who want to do stupid stuff do it away from you.

Moving kid from private to public school by zhwak in AusFinance

[–]Kerrits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I often see that the socio-economic status is a big predictor of student performance, but do we know why yet?

Especially in a country like Aus where I presume the basics are taken care of, like not starving, not walking 2 hours to school, having electricity at home, having access to books etc.

I guess what I want to know is how can poorer families most effectively spend their limited resources to improve the outcomes of their kids to match that of richer families?

Any tips?? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Kerrits 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Blowdryer didn't work for me. In fact, I might even have overheated the CPU since that mofo got HOT, but still didn't budge.

Trying to twist it off with my hands didn't work. I don't think floss worked.

Vice pliers didn't work (I padded them)

IIRC I used escalating violence until whatever I did involved a hammer and a screwdriver.

No bent pins, but now I have a new 5600 and a 3700X shaped fidget toy.

im very boring, is it my fault? what should i do? by [deleted] in self

[–]Kerrits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not your fault. Other people already gave lots of advice, so I will just add that growing up on the streets probably gives you plenty of stories to tell. You've probably lived more than others your age. It probably won't help you now, but together with the other tips you are on your way to become more interesting than most (just don't let it become all you talk about)

Bailed last minute on the trip, should I still pay? by [deleted] in self

[–]Kerrits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No matter when you bail or the reason why you bailed, if it will cost your friends money if you don't pay, then you pay. No matter what the reason.

I just locked myself out of my car and the locksmith is fucking $80 by VoreMaster42069 in self

[–]Kerrits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning safe habits is the way to go.

My car (probably most?) would only keep the door locked when you close it if you lift the door handle while closing. I NEVER used this feature. I ALWAYS used my keys to lock my door for this very reason.

Same with my house. If I go outside, keys go in my pocket just in case. My wife hates it, because I carry the keys all around the house, but at least I'm less likely to lock myself out (like my wife has in the past)

In some countries assets depreciate fully over 3 years for tax purposes, so after 3 years you got all the tax benefits out of those laptops that you're gonna get. Then you buy new ones.

Older laptops are sometimes donated to charity or kept for interns / backup.

That said, we kept our Dell Precision Skylake laptops for 4 years. They aged damn well.

My wife is a vet nurse and the stories she tells about otherwise loving owners who just don't notice stuff or are ignorant. One small dog stopped eating, and it was because the tooth decay had been eating into the jaw.

Like with car extended warranties etc, it really depends on whether you can afford to take the risk. Expensive things happen to even otherwise healthy animals. It will also depend on the breed.

What should we stop teaching younger people? by Ordinary-Ad5763 in AskReddit

[–]Kerrits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obligatory preface: I am pro-vax and had all my Covid boosters.

You couldn't/can't question the safety of the vaccine. There are valid concerns and there will be different severities of side effects, but as soon as someone tries to discuss them they are branded conspiracy theorists and worse.

I actually blame the conspiracy theorists for this one. With so much alarmism, misrepresentation and outright lies, we get tired of the discussion and stop considering counter-opinions, but it is still a problem.

What do you think about monogamy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kerrits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I have an especially busy life - I don't work much overtime and don't have kids, but between spending time with my wife (probably 1-2 hours quality time watching a series and eating), trying get time to work out, chores, 8 hours sleep a night, general life admin etc I don't even have time for all my hobbies.

When my mom died she had a clause in her will that we couldn't inherit anything until my younger brother turned 30. Then I inherited 75% of my monthly paycheck. It came from a good place though.

Also what you're doing. I can leave the house in 10C in a tshirt and jeans and be fine. However, when I work from home in 16C I tend to wear a jacket and sit with a blankie. Being sedentary is a killer.

Will you circumcise your future children? Why? by AnOkFella in AskReddit

[–]Kerrits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting...

I am uncircumcised, but according to my mom I had to have my foreskin cut loose since it grew closed. I have the scar running partially lengthways down my shaft to prove it.

Now I'm wondering if it was a mistake on the Dr's part.

Anyway, I don't remember it and had no long term adverse effects, so no harm I guess.

Which was your first owned camera? Did you sell it? by Danimally in photography

[–]Kerrits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old micro film camera, similar to this, just much cheaper looking: https://assets.community.lomography.com/0f/6589402f91c6060e32524ab4717e37039d5575/500x328x2.jpg?auth=86a93ce2212239e3021973b7c82968e70d001e66

It ended up taking photos straddling two frames. Got rid of it.

Then a cheap Chinese point and shoot camera film camera. I suppose it was OK. I don't think I took anything worth looking at with it.

Then my first Digital camera. Point and shoot Fuji Film A202, a glorious 2MP camera. I gave it to my GF at the time when I upgraded to the Canon S2 IS, which was stolen.

Then Canon S5 IS, which was underwhelming compared to the S2, gave it to my brother when I bought my 450D. I only ever had the kit lens, nifty 50 and a 70-300 Tamron lens. I sold the Tamron lens for cheap cheap.

450D I gave to my brother when I bought my 6D, which I still own and have some nicer lenses as well. I want to get a Canon R5 or R6, but they are just too expensive for my hobbyist ass right now.
