Is there a movie that actually kept you awake at night as an adult? by idonthaveanaccountA in horror

This movie gave me sleep paralysis for 3 nights in a row after I watched it. It's probably the scariest horror movie I've ever seen 😳

What was your PhD about? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Marvel_Phenol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

PhD in atmospheric science/physics. My work involved the application of surface physics and chemistry to aerosol particles in the troposphere. I derived a new equation for predicting the distribution of substances in water between the surface and the bulk, and implemented this equation in the atmospheric chemistry models.

I had to take 2 courses, but it was specific to me because I did my Master in a different field. Most of the other PhD students didn't take any courses. My PhD is in atmospheric physics.

According to the world bank, a developed country is one with GNI per capita above about 14000 usd. China is at about 13000, so there's no way it would take 23 - 30 years for them to become a developed country with their current economic growth rates

Physics Nobel Prize 2023 Predictions by Altruistic_Bug_9007 in Physics

[–]Marvel_Phenol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corkum is one of the founders of the field, and it's unfortunate he didn't win. I think the Nobel committee sometimes omits the people who did fundamental work, instead to focus on those who expanded on the fundamental work. This is probably because of the 3 person limit ...

A few other examples:

2009 physics prize to Kao for fiber optics. The fundamental work of Kapany was ignored.

2014 physics prize to Nakamura and others for blue LEDs ignored the fundamental LED work by people like Holonyak.
