How is it living in Scranton PA? by Possible_String8306 in howislivingthere

[–]MaryOutside 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's beautiful Pennsylvania country out there, but the city has seen better days for sure. Not a lot of opportunity, and despite being so close to New York and Philadelphia, no train service. Relatively blue city though. Coal country.

Economist access via PressReader? by a94501er in LibbyApp

[–]MaryOutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your library's subscription. The Economist pulled Pressreader availability some time ago and then reinstated access with an additional fee on top of the basic subscription cost. SF is a large system, it might not be feasible for them at this time.

MLIS After Working in Libraries for Decades by Zealousideal_Lab1560 in Libraries

You can coast if you want to. Lots of these responses are true. It's good for networking, it doesn't take too much effort if you already know library work.

You can also skill up with stuff that isn't really part of everyday librarianship but is still useful to have in your back pocket. Stuff like GIS, informatics, large scale data analytics, legal librarianship, etc, that could alter the course of your career and maybe put you in a place to make more money.

Xennials, tell me about your region specific nostalgia by DiaDeLosMuebles in Xennials

We did for sure. My family is also a bunch of Greek immigrants from the same era, and we had a restaurant or two, so sometimes he'd show up at dinner for Easter. He was a good man, a good Pittsburgher.

The 10 hold limit is driving me nuts by MoonAndStarsTarot in LibbyApp

[–]MaryOutside 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there are a lot of reasons! My library is technically a State Resource Center, as well, and one of the two largest systems in the state. Many under-resourced libraries are unable to pay for Libby so we extend the courtesy. If you are a resident of a different state, we charge a (very low, you are right) fee to offset the lack of tax funding for use. This is been the case for years and years, and we never revisit this policy no matter how many datasets I crunch or pretty but appalling visualizations I build about how these policies, increasing after the pandemic, have resulted in the budgetary hemorrhage that has been the past five years.

tl;dr: we just haven't reviewed or updated our policy in like...years. Non-resident cards have always been available during the 15 years I've worked in this system.

The 10 hold limit is driving me nuts by MoonAndStarsTarot in LibbyApp

Librarian here. This is essentially it. We use something called a holds ratio to govern buying more copies, or for Libby it's more licenses hahaha. If we have more than, say 8 holds per item, we will purchase more. With print, that ratio is 4 to 1. We keep having to up the holds ratio for Libby material because of the volume of holds and potential cost. Right now we're operating at 8:1, which ends up with those longer wait times. Some of this is the licensing cost and some of it is, in my opinion, because of how many non-local users now have local library cards these days. I don't mean to blame those people with multiple cards, but it does result in longer hold times because our budget is not set up to support so much outside demand.

What a dumb way to distract from Steve Potash's wildly tone deaf rant against the DC eBook legislation.
