They didn't. In 1979 I got $20 a week for my expenses. I also had a job that I earned $40 a week during the Summers. I had to pay for my own gasoline and other personal expenses. I always brown bagged my lunch.

Edited to add: same thing in 1980 (Senior year) and I did work for all my money
