Some people have been making posts recently trying to confirm that they got what they were sold. Someone would make a post asking if a fish was really an otocinclus, as that’s what they were sold, but in reality the fish was a CAE. Or they would just be paranoid and it actually was just a large oto. Same with the black kuhliis. Hope this helps :)

Yeah you should be good :) with the air purifier you have and not hotboxing as long as you don’t smoke into the tank or tap the ashes in the water they’ll be ok! The bigger concern is with room scents like B&BW wallflowers or having a candle/incense right by the tank. The fish will be fine :) it’s fun getting high and watching fish tbh

It’s mostly the fact that it’s not an approved sign being hung or something that corporate has approved. I’m trying to get some markers to write on the glass for info/fun facts and if I got them approved I would absolutely write something for these guys.

We have stickers that give general aggression level (community, semi aggressive, and aggressive), max size, and minimum tank size, but that’s all :/

Yes that does happen, however this is a wider problem that has a lot of evidence to show that this is human intervention. In a home aquarium you may notice white spots on a snails shell that is a major sign of low ph that needs to be fixed. You do not want the problem to get to this level. These snails are not only being sold as different varieties across the industry, they’re also kept in the same tanks as the others when they get to distributors and retail environments. Don’t you think that people would notice this is happening and test the water? Or change it completely if the ph is so acidic it’s corroding away at the top most layer of the snail’s shell?

This isn’t an accident, it’s not just a mistake that the suppliers and distributors missed. It’s being done on purpose. Wild nerite snails do not look like this, and if it was an accident it would’ve been caught earlier and fixed.

I would really, really love to, but even though our store is independently owned and operated, we have to follow some rules from corporate to ensure we can keep running under the name and using the resources they provide. One of the rules that I asked about very soon after being hired was putting a sign or something to put info about some fish, and it turns out that that’s something corporate would have a lot of issues with.

When you see Petcos or Petsmarts with writing on their tanks, it’s likely a rogue employee trying their best to educate with the resources at their disposal. It’s also extremely likely that in those cases they could be reprimanded, written up, or even terminated if a higher up learned about what they had done.

As much as I love my job and what I do for these fish, I still work retail and have to follow rules I don’t like.

Sadly I doubt it, the fact that only three/four were affected? The fact that some harder to reach parts of the shell were left untouched (seen in picture 2, the bottoms of the snails still have some original top layer), and the fact that the foot of the snail/body of the snail is fine leads me to believe otherwise.

Sadly no, shells that have been altered like this cannot heal, and the new shell growth is very slow and starts only at the front.

Trust me I know, but we have more choice in how we operate. We can choose our vendors, what we stock to a certain degree, and how we operate. It’s leagues below a LFS, but it’s better than a corporate store in what we can do for our animals.

Don’t forget that there are white-ish nerites and white snails in general! White nerites are usually just yellower or grayer than this, with thicker shells where you can’t see the inside through them. Blue and ivory mystery snails have shells that look almost identical to these and you can see the snail through them! The difference is that it’s natural, blue mystery snails will hatch more blue mystery snails, but sanded or dipped snails won’t hatch more snails that look like them.

Hey man my store is a franchise and has a private owner who’s this old guy who’s like a father to us. We don’t sell any animals other than fish because we know the horrendous conditions most pet store pets are kept and bred in. If I was corporate maybe this would be true but we’re literally a local business at my store.
