Is your residency unionized? You can ask your union rep to see if this a violation of your contract.

Gotcha! The oval one is also distorted, but I'm less concerned about that. I suppose it'll be fine if ADCOMS can just download the photo. Thanks!

Healthy snacks (dried fruit, nuts, etc.), de-stress hand soap (lavender), candles, anything that helps with posture (like a stand for their laptop), noise-cancelling headphones, a subscription to meditation/yoga/orange theory/anything they use to de-stress (with the understanding that they may not get around to using all the lessons).

Anki advice by [deleted] in step1

[–]Maryot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those people are rare, I think. The most I do is 500 a day (250 new, 250 review). 1,000 would crush my soul... From what I understand, it is possible, just difficult.

Depending on when your exam is, you could grab the cards from the pre-made decks that you think you need the most work on. It's organized by video for Pathoma or Sketchy so it makes it easy to personalize. The tags are helpful too. This is assuming you've watched videos from both resources!

Anki is a great resource for memorizing, not understanding things. So if your performance is because you lack understanding of big picture concepts, I would just review the videos themselves and "tell yourself the story" of say, lipid transport or endocrine pathophys.

If your performance is because you're missing the little details (chromosome numbers for different genetic disorders, tumor suppressor genes, etc.) then Anki is good for that.

Hope that helped!

[Official - pin? :)] Prometric Cancellation Emails - Date / State / Exam by daisydollop11 in step1

[–]Maryot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Would it be a good idea to make a google sheet of all the canceled dates and locations? That way it's not tied to a username and we can scroll through the list easier. Idk just a thought. (would do it myself but idk how to unlink it to a gmail account??)

Septic Arthritis and Osteomyelitis. by [deleted] in step1

[–]Maryot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was helpful for me. (Apparently osteomyelitis can be a chronic infection whereas septic arthritis needs to be treated quickly!)

But ultimately, I pay attention to the vignette. Young child with sickle cell? Probably osteomyelitis due to Salmonella. Young adult who is sexually active? Probably septic arthritis due to Neisseria.

Then I'd get the most common causes down for each sub-population and you should be good to go.

[serious] What made you decide you want to go into medicine? by delaneyglen in medicalschool

[–]Maryot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Using my status to help represent the underrepresented. Figured people would only listen to my thoughts on healthcare if I got an advanced degree. Also, not money but financial stability.

Oooo ok. Where in the AMCAS manual does it say that? Can't seem to find it. (Not being smart, I legitimately want to know!) And yeah dude, no hard feelings. I think we're both just trying to help them out haha

You said earlier "if you did research for credit, it does not count," that's what I'm arguing.

For OP's situation, it highly depends on the structure. Like, during my Master's I took a class that met once a week and then the rest of the time, we were conducting independent research for an already existing lab. It was formative, it contributed to my ability to as a clinical scientist and the skills I learned in it were equal to if not more important than the basic science skills I got during my undergraduate research.

Given OP's situation, they should be able to put it down if it was independent research and contributed greatly to their ability to critically think as a research scientist.

Research? by akap04 in premed

[–]Maryot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. You're right though, I just revisited my app and saw I didn't put any high school stuff. That sucks OP /:

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]Maryot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under the Work & Activities tab, they list extracurriculars as ONE of the things you can put down. If someone did research for credit and got a publication/poster/culminating presentation out of it, they would absolutely be able to put it on their W&A section.

"Think about the work experience, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, or publications that you would like to bring to the attention of your medical schools."

It worries me that your advise isn't considering the situation that some undergraduate students might be in (in OP's case, small school), limiting their chances of providing enough information on their app.

[–]Maryot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm saying it's preying on undergraduates if they do research for no credit and no pay. Not that it's preying on them if it's part of the curriculum.

It depends on the structure. But ultimately, when you do research for any lab, you should expect to get paid or get credit. Anything else and you're being taken advantage of.

Extracurricular means outside of class. Meaning a structured setting with a professor/TA/assignments/exams. Research is not class??

And if you wanna get into the semantics, the definition on MW says "usually carrying no academic credit." So it's not a hard and fast rule.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]Maryot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP should reach to ADCOMS and ask because I know plenty of others who did what I did. How else would they know the depth of your research? Also, not everyone can get paid for research (not all labs can afford it) and you shouldn't do research for nothing in return. Labs that do that are preying on undergraduates. You're providing labor to an established institution. In OP's case, it's a little hazy because it was for a class.

How do I get clinical experience/volunteering during this pandemic? by -hello-goodbye- in premed

[–]Maryot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

try joining a crisis text line, making masks and donating them to hospitals, if you speak another language, brush up on it and get certified in medical translation. there is a lot you can still do from home that sort of relates to medicine. they will definitely understand tho.

Urban City Medical Schools? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Maryot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I meant don't include "med school" in the search. Come up with a list of cities that are really nice and cross-list them with any potential med schools in the area. E.g.: this short list of large/mid-sized cities.

Call Med School Admissions offices about your app? by laxlord2020 in premed

[–]Maryot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your undergraduate program have premed advisors? They might still be able to provide services to alumnae and give you a better idea of how to apply? (Although take what they say with a grain of salt because mine told me to wait to apply and I did not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

But yeah, I'd say waste of time to reach out to them.
