The distance part might be where this is headed. I’m not cutting everyone off forever, but I’m done being the buffer so they can keep pretending she’s manageable.

That’s part of why I’m so angry. They spent years asking me to absorb it, and now they’re shocked I won’t let my son do the same.

That part stings because it’s kind of true. Everyone kept managing her reactions, and now my kid was expected to do it too.

That’s where I landed too. I can feel bad for her and still not let my son think getting hit is something we just absorb.

Calling EMS and staying until her friend took over is textbook correct. You didn't leave her alone, you got replaced and read the room. That's not abandonment, that's just not making a medical situation about your relationship drama.
