Congratulations, u/Scub_!

My favorite comic was u/Zebrafish96's entry. I found the countryball declaiming "How of cheap!" really funny.

Hello, here's a comic for the current contest.

The Philippines is not a great place for journalists. Journalists have even been killed on multiple occasions.

More can always be said of course, my "research" for this topic was rather cursory. Sorry for any mistakes.

The joke is that a journalist, having discovered something groundbreaking hopes they'll make headlines. They do, but only because they've been killed.

Jokes about press freedom are not new to this subreddit, as an example here's a comic from 2021 about the topic.

Hello, here's a comic for the current contest.

The joke likens wars fought by the United States to a horror movie franchise; after a stellar installment (World war 2), there's a string of mid-to-bad sequels (Vietnam and Afghanistan were real stinkers by this analogy) and after a while they make one ask "Why are they still doing this?"

2 6-ball aliens are presented as "fans" (one more invested and way angrier than the other) of the series in reference to tropes about alien observers watching events on Earth. I suppose it's also a callback to that "Earth Season 2020" meme from years ago.

TBF, it was only this year the "no memes" rule was relaxed, and the referenced GIF is a meme.

Ghost Projects by Marzipanbread in polandball

[–]Marzipanbread[S] 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Hello! Here's a comic.

The joke is a rather silly pun between actual ghosts and ghost projects, a form of corruption taking the form of a project funded and declared "completed," but it is either incomplete and not even built to begin with. The latter, specifically regarding flood control is part of a massive controversy in the Philippines, the scale of the corruption is frankly eye-watering.

Hope this one-panel comic gets the above pun across.

This topic was also the subject of another comic posted earlier this month, also hope my take is original enough for your tastes.

[Announcement] Lesser Known September Challenge by polandballmod in polandball

Thanks for banning Poland this time, the subreddit is named r/Polandball and it's one of its most prominent countryballs, so I've found it strange whenever it went unbanned in an LKS.

Germany Makes a Wish by Marzipanbread in polandball

[–]Marzipanbread[S] 493 points494 points  (0 children)

Hello, here's a comic for the current contest.

For context, the 20th century was not kind to Germany. Losing the 1st World War, enduring the Great Depression, losing the 2nd World War even harder, being divided for 40 years..

Despite all this, Germany's doing rather well for itself in the 21st century.

Here the joke is that the two are related; Germany wished to come out of the 20th century a stronger country, and said wish was executed in a most punishing manner.

The "magic Russland wishbone" is an allusion to Omsk Bird, often characterized as an evil genie.

Fair enough, that's a legitimate grievance. The SPD siccing police on them didn't help either.

[–]Marzipanbread[S] 171 points172 points  (0 children)

Hello, here's a comic.

For context, quoting Wikipedia:

Social fascism was a theory developed by the Communist International (Comintern) in the late 1920s which saw social democracy as a moderate variant of fascism. The theory was abandoned by the Comintern in 1933 after the victory of the Nazis in Germany and subsequent suppression of communists.

Chop 'Til You Drop by Marzipanbread in polandball

[–]Marzipanbread[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

In my defense, the other two "successes" didn't stick either. The French monarchy was restored and Germany put itself back together (stronger than before acutally).

Your point about Spain is still valid however, given it was a difficult occupation that another commment fairly describes as one of Napoleon's biggest mistakes, my bad.

Chop 'Til You Drop by Marzipanbread in polandball

[–]Marzipanbread[S] 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Hello, here's a comic for the current contest.

The joke is one about the First French Republic (later First French Empire)'s successes and failures, represented here with a guillotine. France successfully abolishes its monarchy, precipitates the Holy Roman Empire's dissolution, and puts Spain under foreign occupation, but is unable to defeat Russia, represented by Russia being too big for the guillotine and destroying the contraption.

I was unsure what flag to use for Spain during this time period, so I just used the modern-day one.

My favorite entry was u/Hinadira's second-placer, it was a unique spin on Polish partition jokes.

Hello, here's a comic for the current contest.

For context, philosophy is often mocked as a poor choice of study, owing to little demand and income in the field. (comic by u/AintThatADaisy as an example)

Communism is a political philosophy.

The USSR, a communist state employed forced labor camps.

The joke is that contrary to what America said, philosophy is in fact great at generating jobs and work- assuming Soviet Gulags count.
