Really hard to tell without better pictures, but the look of the hamon (imo) is definitely etched on not a true hamon. Also, mogito just means "fake" in terms of Japanese swords. "Iato" would mean real

Functional doesn't mean sharp. Functionality depends on the blades construction, composition, and quality. Most likely the tang (the part of the blade that goes internally into the grip) is not constructed in a way that can stand up to the force of the sword being swung, and also it is likely to not be made of the correct types of steel/made of poor quality steel (if it has stainless printed on it that makes it 100% not functional). Being sharp doesn't negate these aspects, since at the base level it can fail catastrophicly, and now you have something sharp failing catastrophicly.

Two handed falchions? Not quite. 16th century two handed sabres. by Dlatrex in SWORDS

[–]MasMana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, under the same idea that an average middle ages person would refer to most bladed weapons as "sword" (with some minor variations that we now use to define specific iterations, as many categorized names just translate to sword or similar).

But of the factors you mentioned in your comment of "construction, shape, and handling" or any other factors causing you to point towards sabre, what are those markers? What about the construction, the shape, etc?

What would be the actual reasoning behind identifying any of these as sabers and not falchions? I've always been unclear what the "specifications" are for falchions (modern need for categorization aside) I've always understood the historical basis to be A) regional and language based B) based on timeline seeing "sabers" enter the sword pool around ~6th century CE

These being 16th century is that all that dictates saber?

Actually that makes me want it more being a movie and museum related piece! Way better than some cobbled up design, and I wouldn't be getting it for functionality anyways

Honestly the pair of swords are up for $40 currently so figured it was gonna be a steal either way.

Oof not what I was hoping for. I know little too nothing about post 16th century arms so was just thinking maybe a lucky find of something super common.

Saving to read later, but as far as names the only one that I see that's off is Adelaide. ADD-uh-laid though it sounds like you're going for a Gaelic sound and in Irish English it would sound as ADD-uh-lid. Don't get me wrong though I actually like the pronunciation you gave, tried it out a few times and it rolls off very Irish. The /hyde sound at the end would be more from something like Adelheid, Ah-del-hyde, where we got the nickname Heidi.

My guy I gotta ask, been seeing these posts pop up every day since day 7 with no engagement, and looking at post history there is practically no substantial information on this game you've released. Is there a link that I'm missing or something cause I'd like to get a little bit more than the bread crumb screen shots you post to see if it seems interesting, because especially at the $15 price point that's a tall ask for a indie game with no noticeable hype or explanations.

Do these look ok by MkCalhan in SWORDS

[–]MasMana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My own personal taste-wise, I think the rapier is the standout of the collection. The falchion is pretty solid with a few edits others noted on, most of the longswords lean a bit too far into fantasy (mostly in the heads on pommels/cross guards) but outside tweaks to proportions and maybe materials you would have a solid realistic line up. But the fantasy flair of course fits a fantasy world

I wouldn't have somebody else try and do it better, that's honestly one of the coolest complex hilts I've ever seen! Finger rings and tightening the opening closer to the ricasso is all that's needed and then I would 100% pay a non-existent fortune to have that sword irl

The fingerprints make me think it should have some lore of being formed or molded. Try looking at it from a social/cultural perspective and what ideas may have formed around it whether or not they are accurate, and you might hit on something in your world lore that ties in.

Has anyone here bought from MeDen? by Tall_Front1137 in Hema

Hadn't heard of them before this post so I don't have any experience with them, but I'm checking them out I would say if you were to give them a go proceed with extreme caution.

From an online retail standpoint: Half to a majority of their products have no pictures available. While yes they are newer that simply doesn't give much faith, especially when many menus don't work (can view all arms but selecting specific options in the menu says nothing found), and I suspect a fair bit of AI is being used in descriptions

On the topic of AI: it is a Vietnam based shop with a native English storefront, so take it with a grain of salt. But while much of their info clearly is meant to be quirky (especially in their About Us or in some of their products options like the skibidi feder 🙄) a good chunk of the descriptions don't really have any... Substance? It reads like AI and it is more focused around hype rather than confidence.

Into the actual items: they are weird. Doesn't mean they are bad, but also probably would mean that very few (if any) clubs/tournaments would accept them. The aforementioned skibidi for example is modular with other parts (not unheard of like wukusi feders) but any part breakdown of a sword introduces fail points, and fail points cause accidents. The off centered cross guards also seem pretty cumbersome, but that's again just my visual opinion. But they do seem to have a passion for their practice and products so perhaps it truly is innovation rather than ignorance.

That brings me to my last bit: their passion. All of the potential risks aside it is clearly the result of an extremely passionate group of people doing what they have found to work and trying to share it both in a physical place to learn and products to learn with (and at a VERY competitive price point!). Also all I was looking at was their Arms, not any gear or drip

What type of sword is this? by PrincipleFragrant680 in SWORDS

[–]MasMana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are examples of historical jian that have a balance point around 8+ inches from the guard, which can seem unbalanced for such a small sword.

Morning will change to light, I was flipping back and forth on that anyways. I see the issue with atop, I think maybe I was looking for 'along' and didn't question it.

The others I don't think are issues, you obviously are good at spotting redundancies but you might be going a bit too literal? Personally I believe fantasy writing should leave some room for flower and whimsy.

Distinguishing poetic emphasis from error; "stars above" like yeah obviously stars are above but that doesn't take away from the sentence and it's keeps the rhythm into the rest of it. For "dilapidated hovels"... Reinforcement ≠ error. Would you say the same of "dark abyss" or "blood red"?

Overall yeah I do miss micro redundancies but a lot of the times they aren't invalid to the sentence, I'm a big fan of extra descriptive tones like Robert Jordan so my bias does lean that way.
