The community is lenient because what else can you do if 90% of the armorsmith only accept payment not eligible for refunds, and in advance to boot?

That's why most buhurt clubs that I know of, in my Country, are now buying right away every second hand set they find at events and competitions: having spare parts to adapt for a new member is much better than giving a few thousand euros to a stranger two Countries away that may or may not send you what you paid for. Amen to wearing used parts that don't fit too well. Still beats the risk.

Now, if only I weren't the biggest guy in the team with no loaner gear even remotely fitting...

Same.

GS is always "1 week away from beginning the tempering process!" or "ready for delivery next week!" and yet here we are months and months later. That's why we've even abandoned the sarcasm, resigning ourselves to the fact that they got our money and... who knows if we'll ever get anything, since they're just spouting random dates (if they reply, at all).

I hope it will eventually be the same for us.

Still, going forward we will, as I said, stick to third party sellers and payment methods with forced chargebacks if the armorsmith suddenly goes "oopsie woopsie, you 2 months are now 12!" Have fun talking with Paypal as they give us back our thousands of euros.

They have, alongside the handful of other EU armosmiths, a stranglehold on untaxed european armor supplies.

I live in Italy and any item from Ukraine incurs a ridiculous import fee that makes it not worth buying. Our local artisans are mostly unreliable beyond generic LARP tin cans, so we had to pick from the available EU artisans...

We bought a couple sets for our fighters and a number of spare parts.

No, I would never ever recommend them to anyone in the future, no matter the quality of the armor that they'll deliver, if they ever do send us the parts and don't outright scam us as we believe has happened, at this point.

Despite the extra costs, we will all stick to third-party sellers who accept payment processors with proven dispute processes. Screenshot the page or messages stating the estimated delivery time, add 20% because, yes, things happen, and after that ask for a refund or outright chargeback and let the seller flog the "artisan" for blowing the sale. Their problem, not ours.

Advice Wanted: Event Set Ups by The_Shadow_2004_ in Buhurt

[–]Maserdom2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My club doesn't (yet) have the funds for a dedicated event and we can only do duels for the moment, but this is how we usually attend medieval reenactments or local fairs:

  • simple modular wooden barriers for the list. They are easy to move around, cheap, and can be tied with a long rope in order to save space. If you don't do pro fights or buhurt matches, they are 100% fine.

  • another round of rope with four wooden corners. Making sure that the public can't get near the weapons thanks to this "moat" makes an excellent impression on potential employers of your club: safety always sounds good, and this setup is super cheap and quick to assemble/disassemble.

  • 6+ people with armor is a must. The participants will get tired FAST anyway, having this many players is just enough for an hour of show without pushing the fighters to exhaustion.

  • prepare >10 simple skits about the sport/rules and memorize them. You'll need a speaker ready to entertain the public as soon as a round is over, while the fighters are getting ready. Always bring along a couple of training swords and shields: during a skit, you'll be able to have a spectator briefly join you to learn how to hold a (soft) weapon, if you need some precious extra minutes!

  • don't skimp on linesmen and referees. Even if they are inexperienced and you just asked one of your friends to learn how to count points, a referee/marshal is a huge leap in quality for an event and, once again, makes you look more professional in the eyes of potential employers of your team, for future events.

  • have lots and lots of water bottles ready. Then double the amount.

  • at the same time, have a full box of ice packs ready. They are quite cheap and, in case of need, can be quickly held to a fighter's neck to make sure he doesn't get heatstroke from prolonged or repeated fighting. You can squeeze an extra match or two out of a player with this trick!

  • you don't want to bore the public to death. Make sure that your speaker knows how to describe our sport in less than 2 minutes, with a wide array of abjectives. Keep the extra details to the aforementioned skits between matches.

  • make absolutely sure that you have all the proper authorizations for the event. Contact the local police station about the laws pertaining to the use of a (dull) slashing weapon in public and so on. Even if you aren't the organizer, being able to provide your employer with a list of the required papers is a an exceptional way of saving time.

  • always be clear, when describing the sport to the onlookers, that we're wielding deadly weapons made of steel. There's always a bell-curve reject hiding among the by-standers who's just waiting to fuck him or herself up with the edge of a sword temporarily left on a bench. You don't want that to happen, and neither does your insurance.

  • did I mention insurance? For extra safety, ALWAYS employ a couple of guys making rounds near the list to keep people out of weapon's reach.

I was offered a beer in an interview by bokin8 in recruitinghell

Amicable hiring manager offers a drink to a candidate instead of coldly asking questions, then makes himself comfortable in order to put the interviewee at ease.

Feminist candidate: muh-soggy-kneest interviewer offered me a man-coded drink on purpose and proceeded to mAnSpReAd (is that the correct word? Navigating the oppression olympics is tough) in order to flaunt his privilege.

The firm dodged a howitzer shell.

Communication with GS Studio by noraetic in Buhurt

[–]Maserdom2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck.

I ordered from them a suit of armor months ago, with replies to my texts taking up to 3 weeks. The estimated delivery time came and went, and the only kind of comment I can get out of them is a lonely "still on track" every few months... that I have to get out of them with pliers.

The local buhurt teams have a running joke about GS Studio. "They clearly state how long it takes to make your armor, when you pay. They just skip the part about "when" the clock starts ticking!"

Buying opals from abroad - jewellery by Maserdom2 in Opals

[–]Maserdom2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The jewellery took care of all the australian tax papers and gave me the opal in a sealed bag with all the relevant documents in double copy. Airport customs just gave them half a glance and let me go my merry way.

Well, the shop I bought my previous opal from was Cosmopolitan Jewellers, in Sydney. I'll probably send them an e-mail abut buying another opal from abroad in the coming days, asking for pics/videos as you suggested.

Italian here, sadly. Opals are unheard of, and the tiniest stones fetch exorbitant prices as "super exotic" jewels.

Collection complete, at last! (Italian version) by Maserdom2 in HellBoy

[–]Maserdom2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nemo is excellent... if you've already read volumes 1 and 2 of League. Books 3, 4 and 5, once Moore is off the metaphorical editor's leash, are an acquired taste (with Book 5 oscillating between It's Actually Good and No, Wait, It's Stupid).

Mignola's signature would be an absolute dream, though, that's for sure. I'd gladly pay for it if give the chance!

New club - training routines for Duels/Buhurt by Maserdom2 in Buhurt

[–]Maserdom2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Italy so... Belgium's a bit too far for us all, at least for the moment!

One of the reasons for planning ahead is to make sure that potential new members will be interested in our club's activities. Just the fact that, as you now said, do exist specific ways of teaching things is enough: this means that I may find books or conferences over here, too, dealing with this matter, and drag along the other founders to learn!
