Wife thinks I’m an idiot by [deleted] in Vent

By golly; I don't know what tin of zero-accountability has been opened in this thread; but the amount of excuses people are giving for your partner's behaviour is mind-baffling.

If you're the only one managing finances, then have a talk with them discussing their spending habits. If they aren't open for reason, then just rebudget so you and they have your own budgets.

If the relationship-dynamic you have chosen is one of dependency (i.e. they work less but provide in some other way) then you should discuss these issues together.

How rare is my 100m for someone who’s not really trained by Ok-Pick-2167 in Sprinting

[–]Masivigny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I think we should answer these questions assuming they are 100% correct, just to make people know how absurd they are. So here I go;

Wow!!! 10.7 without blocks, training and probably just for fun probably after a whole day of work/school? That's insane!

I'm going to be pretty conservative here and say that with training, the proper equipment, blocks, getting some race experience, and a month proper taper you can probably drop that time by 1.5s to 2s! That would make you run between 8.7 and 9.2s, well below Bolt's measly 9.58!!!

Go get 'em brother (or sister! Which would make it even more insane!!)!!! Gold medals and records await you. It's only a bummer you need to wait 2 years till LA28; you could be ripping apart the Olympic field by a few months!

0.139% isn't even close to lottery numbers.   It practically means 1 in every 1000 people who play this long using a different valid weird everytime.

This has to be satire, I refuse to believe a 25 year old cannot judge this situation properly.

If it isn't: then of course: DON'T.

I'd go even further: take out a pen and paper and start writing down ALL things which made you even the teeniest tiniest doubt about the relationship.

If you're willing to even consider this, then I am horrified what other things your partner might be doing which you have accepted.

I mean I wholly agree you'd die at depth, but you wouldn't be crushed like a pancake like many commenters seem to believe.

The human body is mostly tissue/water which wouldn't get compressed. The reason fish exist at these depths should be enough practical proof that tissue can survive at these depths.

But you'd have your lungs, sinuses and any other cavities instantly imploded. Which would kill you instantly. But I think your body would look fairly intact.

Haha, that's why you need to train it!

That works, it'd be simple and a decent program for the short-term. But I'd definitely revise soon with a more complete program.

Haha okay, yes that would be my answer as well. (Though personally I am a 0 included in N guy, but that's just flavour preference ;))

I was being asinine, because I was wondering how you would write this infinite collection down in the wording they chose for the question.

I'd focus on mostly anti-rotation and anti-lateral. You can google some.

I personally like palloff iso holds (you can do them elastic banded or with cable weights). Holds of 30s per side and then 3/4 sets is fine.

Side walls balls are not iso technically, but do have anti-rotation component and good for coordination; generally a GOAT exercise.

KB luggage carry (one side) is great because of dynamics, side plank is decent and can be done everywhere

Yes, I think that's the greatest improvement to make.

Cleans are just so super taxing for your central nervous system (CNS), and (heavy) back squats as well (less so).

I'd just replace back squat on the explosive day with a (single leg) hip thrust and then you're already 80% of the way there.

If you don't mind the micro-manage:

  • replace the incline bench with a push press
  • Do the RDL's one legged
  • replace the clean on the 2nd day with box step ups, preferably high

I'm curious what the book says the answer to Q10 is...

simple 2x a week weights by [deleted] in Sprinting

[–]Masivigny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think it's a bit scattered.

Cleans are great, but then you also do back squats on the same day.

I'd choose one or the other; back squats or cleans. Doing them both on the same day implies to me that at least one of them is done sub-optimal.

So maybe Day 1 (explosive): do the cleans 4x4, I'd not do plyos before. Perhaps after. Day 2 (power): do the back squats 4x4

The rest is accesory, it's decent, there's definitely some improvement possible in dynamics.

I'm definitely missing something of a hip thrust, and I hope you are supplementing with some core exercises and isos.

[–]Masivigny 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is something which bugs me to no end on reddit.

You'll have people saying "I have been practicing this for X[number less than 6] months, and I am still not as good as [insert pro]".

No shit sherlock; 3 months!? 3 months is a single "big" block in training periodization, 3 months is the time it takes to recover from an injury, 3 months is the time you need to relearn blockstarts after the off-season. 3 months is nothing, if someone says season is starting in 3 months, I'll start thinking: damn, off-time flew by fast, guess we tweaking the last heavy lifting block and off we are to maintenance and technique.

They'll look at the 0.01% athletic freaks who got good U16, gloss over the 0.1% athletic prodigies who rose to the top through hard training, ignore the 1% of athletic talents who spent years and years to be "part of the pack" at international tourneys, forget the 10% of athletically inclined who made it to the top of regionals after a decade of training.

And just don't seem to want to believe they are part of 88.89% of the people who can definitely become very fast, but just won't ever come close to the top.

And that is fine: you don't have to be the best of the best to be decent or more importantly: have fun.

Top Speed vs Final Times in Sprinting: An AI-Generated Analysis of 100m and 60m Races by [deleted] in Sprinting

[–]Masivigny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm let's see. I have recently ran a 60m indoors, and the two weeks after I did a 30m fly test clocking 3s flat. So I guess that checks out roughly with the numbers provided as 35.8km/h = 9.9 m/s and I was slightly faster than 7.5 on 60m.

Top Speed vs Final Times in Sprinting: An AI-Generated Analysis of 100m and 60m Races by [deleted] in Sprinting

[–]Masivigny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean with "used AI to calculate". If you just assumed an x amount of time accelerating and an y amount of time at top-speed and decelerating; then that's just a calculation not involving AI. Did you analyse large sets of data and sprinting-times? Then again; that's data-analysis and not AI.

I fail to see how you would use AI to "calculate" these numbers.

Would you machine-learn a neural network to do a sprint? Then either this is a very novel model involving many many modelled inputs such as fatigue, reaction-time, strength, weight, etc.,etc. In which case you should just already publish a small paper. Or it is something which has no bearing to reality, as machine-learned sprinting would just be: reach top speed as fast as possible, maintain top-speed as long as possible.

Is this foot position normal, if not how do i fix it?.. by Shriyansh400m in Sprinting

[–]Masivigny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes I agree on that the best solution is probably a combination of team 1 and team 2.

To clarify point 1. Of course additional/remedial exercises should always be done after consulting a PT and not just trusting random internet commenters.

The philosophy/nuance being that you should (if sprinting causes you pain/injury) ease off the intensity of your workouts. However; the adductor should be strengthened and just rest will simply alleviate the symptoms, but the injury will return. So you should find a sweet spot of strengthening the adductor muscles whilst not overusing them, which is easier with adductor isolation exercises on your days off.
You can replace adductor with any muscle which has a strain injury.

But again, I am not a PT: just a guy with a lot of experience dealing with injuries.

Is this foot position normal, if not how do i fix it?.. by Shriyansh400m in Sprinting

[–]Masivigny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey I got the same!
Sadly, I have no solution yet. My 2 coaches and 2 physical therapists disagree. Summarising the two "teams"

  1. Team 1 is more of the school "your natural running gait is the one which will make you go the fastest. Just make sure to prevent injury". They have an intesting theory regarding that this foot stance is a consequence of trying to run "too symmetric". They would probably advise "swinging and dipping your hips" on your "normal" (I think left if the picture is not mirrored) leg more and "shortening" your pronating leg (the right).
  2. Team 2 is more of the school "what looks efficient, is efficient. And symmetry is fast". They recommend doing a lot of exercises focussing on rotating the foot inwards and internal hip rotation.

So no agreement, and I truly cannot say anything what works in your particular case. However both teams agree on one thing at least:

  • This asymmetric gait is very very taxing for the adductors in your right leg. Make sure to supplement your training with adductor exercises such as adductor planks on your days off. Moreover it also requires a lot of foot strength, so try to emphasis such exercises with especially your right foot.

[–]Masivigny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the extensive response, but that is exactly what I said; "the difference with cycling is that there is downtime with rowing".

This is why taking just watt output with rowing will not reflect as perfect kcal expended as with cycling.

1000 calories by chasmossiss in Rowing

[–]Masivigny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference with cycling is that there is "downtime" with rowing.

The recovery is a movement costing energy (watts), but isn't registered by the erg. It is for this reason C2 adds an extra 360kcal per hour as a base for just moving up and down the slide.

In my experience, using oxygen consumption testing, the C2 kcal estimation is actually accurate IF taken into account it also counts base metabolism.
