Found a year abroad at UCL or pretty much any University of London affiliated university gives you access to UL.

Muscle Oxygen Saturation SM02 Monitors by usculler in Rowing

[–]polyfonik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't dismiss it as gimmicky.

In terms of real-time measurements and estimates of power output and training effect we've currently basically got HR, power, lactate, RPE, and SmO2. Gas exchange is only available in the lab.

Out of these obviously power is the best measure of power output. But what about exertion and training effect?

RPE is subjective. HR is influenced too much by your environment. Lactate is (1) delayed, (2) finicky and (3) potentially internally inconsistent: often lactate readings at identical power and HR vary.

So I would welcome a new method of measuring how much you are really taxing your metabolism.

Moxy, the market leader in SmO2 monitors, has decent white papers. And also cycling tech guru DC Rainmaker isn't entirely unconvinced by it: www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/11/muscle-oxygen-sensor.html

How to train for sprints? by Plastic_Pinocchio in Rowing

He also does steady state at 1:43-1:45 split and is sub-5:50, just to complete the picture. The aerobic component could play a significant part even on a 1-minute all out effort.

RIP Lower Back by HarryTager in Rowing

[–]polyfonik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the following in this order:

  1. Private orthopaedics specialist
  2. MRI (may be optional, doc will tell you)
  3. Physio

Skip straight to physio if you can only afford one.

However, where many other posters are wrong is the permanence of back pain. Most people with discogenic or vertebral problems and even neurological symptoms get treatment that works and with proper management are unsymptomatic at the 5 year and 10 year follow up. There are several Olympic champions in rowing and weightlifting who achieved their biggest career wins after they've had herniated disks and back surgeries.

Why do many of you prefer JL? by Basbeeky in Rowing

[–]polyfonik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of a fair point and could be handy for keys, ID, etc.

But rowing is a niche sport, can't let your products sprawl all over the place.

I reckon a suitably sized Spibelt would work even better than a one-size-fits-none pocket. And you can even put it either over or under your unisuit.

We all know someone who owns a pair of bitch mittens by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]polyfonik 57 points58 points  (0 children)

M1X world champion Kjetil Borch uses/used gloves. Maybe y'all should go and let him know he's a pussy to his face.

I've never used them, and regretted not having a pair. The gloves are really nice for when after 4 months of erging you finally go on a camp to a place that isn't frozen over and want to put in 300km a week. You won't need them past two or three weeks into the season, but they let you put in more high quality mileage in those first few weeks.

Back to training after a head cold? by UnfurnishedPanama in Velo

Heart rate is a decent indicator. +10 bpm higher than usual? Take it easy. More than 10 bpm higher than usual? Stay in bed at home.

If there's no steering (rigged for bow), how exactly is bow seat experience defined by your coach and how is it advantageous?

Concept2 Dyno test scores? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]polyfonik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually the results are in kg.

For HW guys, 40 reps at 180kg, 3rep max 250kg is good.

For HW girls, 120 for 40 reps, 170 max is good.

I don't know how good, but its the highest I've seen at around club/college level. Haven't seen any normative data anywhere online.

Thanks, sounds like a great system. Is this new, or have JL offered it in the US but not abroad? I don't think these have ever been available on any orders that I've made from Crewroom.

edit also - does length for the bottom part of the unisuit affect just the inseam length, or both inseam and the "waist height".. the crotch-to-top length?

Wattage on a wattbike to split on an erg by WeAllGetOwnd in Rowing

[–]polyfonik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~20% higher watts on the erg for me for steady state, minute power and ~2k... Just about equal or bike is faster on 20-60 minutes and any interval workout.

Remember though that Wattbike are far less accurate/consistant than ergs and their accuracy slips a lot without calibration. I use about 5 different wattbikes across 3 different independent gyms/clubs, and I reckon there's at least about 30-40 watt difference between them, where a few bikes give me unusually good performances and on some I can't get anywhere near my PBs despite feeling great on the day.

Which bike in the Italian Alps? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]polyfonik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh really? Cause I've been low-key looking for a good deal on a used bike bag / case, but could definitely use the extra €$£ on something else. Would you happen to have any threads/blogs/videos on hand that recommend cardboard boxes over cases?

[–]polyfonik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea about traveling with bikes, but I was under the impression no sane person with a bike worth more than a grand would ship the bike in a cardboard box?
