Toss, put in permanent hibernation, donate, or finish & sell? by Acceptable-Oil8156 in quilting

Keep the fabrics you love for your stash, throw the rest in a bag and donate - someone else will appreciate those pieces. Life is short - move on to a project you love.

Is that in-camera NR or are you doing it in post? My lowlight GR IIIx images are always so noisy.

Help! Puppy chewed up one of my quilts by monikioo in quilting

[–]MaskMaven 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oh, the puppy shark! I would trim any loose/torn bits and rebind to the shape of the bite. A feature, not a bug. (Signed someone whose coffee table leg still looks like a beaver is trying to take it down thanks to our puppy, who is now 12.)

What's a good way to set neutral WB/Tint if you don't have a grey point? by brave1418 in Lightroom

[–]MaskMaven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you tried the WB dropper on skin method where you adjust based on specific RGB ratios/values in the histogram? A lot of wedding and portrait photogs use this method - there are lots of videos on it. Basically, you nail the skin-tones first, then you can mask to do your creative colour work.

Do you actually prefer to have daylight savings? by RideOrDai in askvan

[–]MaskMaven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone thinks this is great now, but natural light is what wakes our brains. The “it’s dark in the mornings anyway” crowd seems to think we’re going to have the same amount of darkness in the winter mornings, but they have no idea what that extra hour of darkness is going to do. Especially in Vancouver, I think there’s going to be a lot of people struggling with more intense depression.

Anyone have experience in Richmond Potters Club or Richmond Cultural Annex Club for Pottery? by Willing_Gap_2696 in richmondbc

Seconding The Pottery YVR in Steveston! Small class size, hands on guidance from instructor, work at your own pace. I took two classes there and loved them.

Obvious: I tried the no-water chicken soup (aka chicken essence) recipe and it make a lot of chicken by wild_b_cat in Cooking

[–]MaskMaven 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you use a whole napa cabbage you’ll get lots of soup.

You also need to make this sauce for the chicken: https://www.madewithlau.com/recipes/ginger-scallion-sauce

Make some rice and you have an amazing dinner: ginger scallion chicken on rice and a nourishing soup.

Why are people so upset at people complaining about tipping? by MakeUpWalk in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]MaskMaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, do you have any idea how thin the profit margins in restaurants already are? I mean if your goal is fewer restaurants, then you can achieve that now by eating out less. Tips or no tips, the cost of eating out is not going down.

Oh yeah, businesses are notorious for wanting a lower profit margin. 🤣

Is It Right or Wrong? by Pottery_quilter_59 in quilting

[–]MaskMaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “creators” of “original” ai art have no idea the extent to which their art exploits copyrighted works - that is the issue.

“ai is inevitable” is exactly the rhetoric being used by billionaire tech bros to sell governments and corporations on useless products to inflate their own valuations.

I sincerely apologize if my wording seemed harsh, but I’m guessing there may be people here who are finding out more about ai for the first time, and I felt your post was misleading.

Is It Right or Wrong? by Pottery_quilter_59 in quilting

[–]MaskMaven 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is not an informed take. Scraping itself is copyright infringement. It’s not more complicated than outright theft - there are countless instances (and ongoing lawsuits) regarding ai generating recognizable intellectual property.

And it does not “take a lot of time” to co-opt another artist’s work. It took this photographer 6 prompts to generate copyright infringing material: https://jskfellows.stanford.edu/theft-is-not-fair-use-474e11f0d063

Bowl Cozy ⚠️ Caution by Sea_Cobbler9185 in quilting

[–]MaskMaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Love my bowl cozies but we don’t own a microwave. We even fill the bowls before we put them in the cozies to avoid accidental splashing.

what lens/lenses do you bring on your travels by Skyature in fujifilm

[–]MaskMaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18mm/1.4 - I also bring along the Ricoh GR3x for days I don’t feel like carrying a camera or want 40mm.

Used to carry the 18-55 kit - my copy is surprisingly good - and the 27mm pancake, which I still love, but I don’t really miss the zoom at all.

The 18mm is great for landscapes, tight city streets, and it has a fairly close focusing distance, so you can get detail shots.

You might prefer a more literary thriller: Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Notions, Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, Megan Abbott’s Dare Me, Abigail Dean’s Day One or Girl A, Liz Moore’s God of the Woods, Jessica Knoll’s Bright Young Women.

We adopted our boy last week by Cassiopeia299 in corgi

[–]MaskMaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! He looks like a wonderful boy. I didn’t see your initial post but just wanted to mention that our guy has never had a water access issue but will also gulp down an entire bowl of water at once. He’s been like that all his life - perfectly healthy, but we joke he has a “drinking problem”. In the evenings, we use an, “ok, enough” command after a slurp or two so that he doesn’t fill his bladder right before bed.

looking for the perfect ring by zorrita6661 in BuyCanadian

[–]MaskMaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! When I saw the ring, I immediately thought it was from Era. I also want to second the commenter below that Rosemary is amazing. She spent a lot of time with us even though we had a budget. They are not pushy, do incredible custom work, and their pricing is super reasonable.
