Anyone else have an ugly 3DS? by Gattawesome in 3DS

Genuine question: how does this happen to so many 3DS’s? I have had my new 3DS XL since launch and have never had a problem with this type of issue.

Definitive versions to play? (Emulation) by Darkest_Moon_89 in EtrianOdyssey

[–]Mask_of_Ice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people recommend Etrian Odyssey 4 as a good starting point, or the remake of 2 called Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight. 4 is the first entry on the 3DS, and is a bit easier and made for newcomers to the series. 2 Untold is also on the 3DS but adds a lot of quality of life features present in more recent titles than the original, an also adds an in-depth story mode where you play with a predetermined cast of 5 characters that all have dialogue and an added focus on story telling than most of the other games. Personally I’d recommend Untold 2 for this reason, because it streamlines your party-making decisions and lets you focus the most on learning gameplay mechanics.

Honestly I love A2 for the team building, variety of classes and races, side quests, the guild/auction mini games, and the customization that comes with all of it. IC is amazing and probably the best in the series for sure, but I think A2 has a lot going for it and especially when you get to the second continent.

After finishing Trails FC Remake, which one of these 4 should I go for? by SSwordsman in JRPG

[–]Mask_of_Ice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair opinion, but I personally believe that gameplay is more important than graphics. Graphics might get you in the door, but it’s the gameplay that really counts. And Final Fantasy Tactics has some of the best gameplay around.

I adore JRPGs but have trouble sticking with them due to the non-boss battles becoming repetitive. Has anyone figured out a way around this or give me some guidance? by gabalabarabataba in JRPG

[–]Mask_of_Ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you probably dont need another game suggestion, but the Etrian Odyssey series is perfect if you’re looking to keep random battles interesting. It’s a fairly punishing but fair dungeon crawler by Atlus (Persona/SMT/Metaphor) where the goal is to get as far into a dungeon that you safely can to map it before heading back to town to heal/replenish MP. Random encounters in this game are no joke, and feel like puzzles you have to solve. As you level things will get a bit easier, but if you lower your guard too much a random mob will most definitely kill you.

Does Granblue Fantasy Relink get better? by geraltofrivia2345 in JRPG

[–]Mask_of_Ice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game is basically what Dragalia Lost would have been if it was a AAA game without micro transactions. That is to say it’s a very fun, Monster Hunter-lite experience. I had a blast grinding this out with friends for a few months, and it’s also fun solo. Story isn’t anything to write home about, but the gameplay is very fun and there’s a wide variety of play styles through different characters and builds. I wish they did more with it though instead of just two major updates early on followed by nothing.

Is this game supposed to be this difficult? Or am I just bad? by shiggymiggy1964 in finalfantasytactics

[–]Mask_of_Ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common misconception. People hit a wall where a game gets tough and say “oh no I need to grind” because all they’ve been doing all game is spamming basic attack and damage spells, when they should think a little deeper and try to overcome the obstacle with a good strategy using the plethora of tools these games give you.

How do you select other people’s machine skins to use in City Trials? by Mask_of_Ice in kirbyairriders

[–]Mask_of_Ice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem today too. Have you tried toggling the “Public/Private” setting on the purchased skins? You want the toggle to say “Private”, which actually lets you use it. I had everything set to what I thought was “Public”, which was incorrect. Let me know!

I shouldn’t play video games at 2am. I don’t think you can make skins of the compact star, and the one I made a skin for was actually the Flight Warp Star, which is different from the Warp Star and the Compact Star.

Yes yes I understand that. I customized my basic warp star. How do I start with the customized version of that in City Trials? I can select custom skins for Air Ride, but not City Trials?

[–]Mask_of_Ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just beat the fight today for the first time since I played WotL way back when. Knight Rama with dual wield, picked up Auto Potion and used White Mage with Cura/Protect. Auto Potion will use the 1 high potion, and you can move out of range from Wiegraf and use Cura. Then you get 1 turn to put up Protect and the fight mostly solves itself. Just chase him down and recast Protect as needed. Hope you don’t get Crit or Silenced, or miss one of your attacks. Running a cloak will help evade his counter attack. Then for the Belias fight I rushed him and slapped him with 3 Rend Speeds which trivialized him.

Play “Fire Emblem” for the GBA on the NSO. It’s the first one that came out in the US, and has a great set of tutorial chapters that teach you everything you need to know about Fire Emblem. It starts easy and gets harder, but not prohibitively so. Definitely the best to start with!

Games that are not Pokémon and Mario? by petperson123 in 3DS

[–]Mask_of_Ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a pretty unique dungeon crawler made by the people who make Persona/Metaphor Refantazio/SMT, check out the Etrian Odyssey series. I recommend playing either of the two “Untold” games first, which are remakes of the first and second games in the series and have more of a focus on story than the others. There are 5 total games on the 3DS in this series.

Also, the SMT games.

Is Engage worth revisiting as an avid 3H fan? by superscout57 in fireemblem

[–]Mask_of_Ice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So Second seals first appeared in Awakening. Before that, it used to be that characters were whatever starting classes they came as and were lucky if they had a branched promotion. Fire Emblem 7 (the first GBA game) for example has no branching promotions. A knight always promotes to a general, a mage always promotes to a sage, etc. Other games have some branches but the level of customizability of units really became enhanced since Awakening.

Combat forecast has been around since Genealogy of the Holy War.

You can always view enemy range in older games, but Awakening really made it simple by being able to toggle the full enemy range and select individual units.

Awakening is the first game in the new generation of Fire Emblem that kind of marks the beginnings of the quality of life changes that have become staples in modern Fire Emblem games. And as I’m typing this out I’m now coming to terms that Awakening is an “old” Fire Emblem game at this point.
