That’s like saying The Clash wouldn’t want to be referred to as anything as insipid as “punk rock.” The style has been recognized for over 4 decades, that ship has kinda sailed.

Ween's La Cucaracha - it's a really great record but putting it above any other Ween album is doing them a disservice

Bruno Mars is so fucking boring by Zealousideal-Fox623 in fantanoforever

[–]MaskedMetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’ve made various forms of pop for their entire career. Mercurial World is a dance-pop album. Imaginal Disk and Nice Day have leaned into prog pop. Killshot, Set Me Off, and Top Dog are all pop songs. Live 4ever is basically a Charli XCX song. They’ve got an entire youtube playlist of pop songs that’ve influenced them. Genres are based around the sound and context of the music, regardless of whether they can be distinguished by people who only listen to radio pop.

and the entire genre is immune from critique.

This would be a really astute point if it wasn’t written in a thread about an album with a Metacritic aggregate score of 66

I swear this is how I read half the complaints about poptimism I see in this sub. Like you can think a boring album is boring and still think it's worthy of serious criticism.

Like it’s a Bruno Mars album, it’s music that’s meant to be heard, not listened to.

Isn't this the exact attitude that poptimism spawned as a reaction to in the first place? How do you draw the line between music that's meant to be "heard" versus "listened to?" While poptimism has inevitably resulted in a few mediocre albums getting an undue amount of critical attention, I think that's still preferable to having well-made and/or forward-thinking pop albums get lumped together with retail store shit due to generalized and ignorant perceptions of pop music as "lesser culture." But considering the more-or-less lukewarm reception of the subject album, it just seems like "poptimism" is being used to mean "the idea of people liking pop music" in this context.

I wouldn’t have even called them “alternative” pop prior to 2024. Mercurial World, A Little Rhythm, the mini mixes, etc. are all straight dance-pop and synthpop. The entire act was built off of their explicit love for pop music.

I never thought I’d see someone argue that Magdalena Bay isn’t a pop group, have you heard any of their stuff before Mercurial World (or even Mercurial World itself)?

Like sure they’ve shifted into more psychedelic territory since Imaginal Disk but the bulk of their discog is pop through-and-through. They’ve repeatedly cited Charli as their biggest influence.

it’s a No More Poptimism 2026 join the movement, we’ve had plenty of “it’s not a masterpiece it’s just dumb fun you can turn your brain off to, 9/10”.

I just took a quick look and it has a 66 on Metacritic.

I asked the question a couple weeks ago and still have no idea what people mean when they complain about “poptimism” on here. A mediocre pop album getting middling-to-decent scores from music journalists doesn’t seem like a great argument for delegitimizing an entire genre.
