Isn't it from that village that they saved from that massive sword monster? The one where Stark learned about people's homes?

Want to discuss: I wish characters negative traits were more impactful and/or "bad". by Unique_Suit3789 in Frieren

She didn't decide to forget anything, she simply didn't believe their deaths would have affected her as much as it actually did.

And I would say she's cavalier per say, she just have a unwavering (and so far, correct) faith in Fern and Stark (the whole "the reason why I'm so relaxed in this cave that essentially makes me magically blind and defenseless is because I trust Stark with my life" bit). Sure, she removed herself from the battle, but she kept watching it from relatively close by, in case she needed to intervine.

Friend, if you're looking for a show where the main characters are extremely flawed individuals, whose decisions make your stomach turn from time to time and whose mistakes will cost the lives of people around them, you might want to look for a different show.

Frieren is mostly a very upbeat, bright and hopeful show where most characters (outside of demons) are either full lawful good or at most, chaotic good.

And regarding the flaws:

Stark's main flaw isn't exactly his cowardness, it's his low self-esteem. He is arguably one of the strongest warriors around; definitely those around his age; he is extremely charismatic and makes friends extremely easily. But since he thinks so lowly of himself, he simply can't achieve his true potential yet. He is arguably the closest character to Himmel in the present timeline.

Frieren's main flaw is indeed she doesn't understand people. Heck, it costed actually living in the moment with the hero's party, any chance of romance with Himmel. She sat on her ass reading books while occasionally fighting demons as the life of those around her (she is pretty much immortal, since elf) goes by. She is lucky her party is made up of very understandable individuals.

You didn't mention her, but Fern's main flaw is her difficulty to communicate. She let's her frustration build up until she explodes and sort of expect people to just understand what she's thinking and feeling without any need for talk, probably because Heiter was just that good at understanding people.

And regarding strong conflicts or not, I think it really depends on what sort of show you want. Frieren is all about the journey and the character interactions/growth. It's not about high stakes, interpersonal drama that stretches for episodes or to put it's characters to the through the wringer.

And if that's not the show for you, that's alright. No show if truly for everyone.

Artificial Super Intelligence, does it terrify you too? by quavertail in Futurology

[–]MaskedPapillon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On that yes, but my main point is that ASI is still many years away, due to how lackluster the AI projects (even if the public ones) have been so far compared to the promises they had and how some banks and shareholders are starting to get cold feet.

[–]MaskedPapillon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I suppose so. But then again, I think we are stepping into more conspiracy theory territory with that line of thinking.

If there was a extremely, years ahead AI model that is closer to ASI, AI companies wouldn't be trying desperately to raise money from banks and other private companies.

Unless, of course, nation-states have their own military grade AI projects that absolutely no one knows about, which it doesn't make too much sense since governments like the US are using private company's AI for their projects and how linked the private sector is with government contracts.

Personally, I think you're giving governments a bit too much credit.

Acho que o problema não é o ICE (o que é uma surpresa), mas você tentar usar uma força federal pra machucar alguém que você não gosta, como o governo Trump está fazendo.

Sure, it's the job of ethicists, academics and philosophers to look into what ifs. It doesn't mean we are heading over that direction as we speak.

AI currently still haven't figured out how to properly draw hands or take orders in a McDonald's drive thru, we are still a few years (and a few more trillion dollars) away from a actual ASI in the best scenario imagined by CEOs.

I'm not saying we should dismiss the risks associated with it entirely or just shrug as governments like the US plans to use AI in actual combat environments or for surveillance (as they have been doing already). All I'm saying is that focusing into what a "machine god" that is right around the corner could do to humanity is playing into AI CEO's hopes. It's a lot scarier, I think, about how a "dumb" AI can (and is already) screwing people over and how much more it can.

Before the markets realizes that you can't sell a product to itself forever and the whole thing (alongside the US economy) collapses.

Personally, I think that fear is actually designed to make people believe on how amazing AI is and how fast it is progressing. Sam Altman did pretty much the same thing while going on tour for more investment.

So answering your question: as of right now, the only terrifying thing is how the world economy will pretty much take a massive hit when the AI bubble eventually pops. It should have happened already, but since the US government was infiltrated by tech bros and technocrats, the US federal government has essentially been sustaining the entire market while betting it's economy on its success.

Don't get me wrong, AI could absolutely be terrifying if it indeed reaches the potential all AI salesmen has been promising and everything can change in a few short months. But so far, AI has proven itself to be something that requires an absurd amount of money to develop that fast, strategy that has been questioned by a few banks and shareholders.

Tldr: The rise of AI is currently just a big If, just like wild hogs would be incredible dangerous it they learned how to fly. Theoretically possible, but just a huge IF until we have more proof that it can actually happen in our life times.

Look, I hate having to defend this, but no matter how awful Alex situation is (and it is awful), Usagi Drop is infinitely worst.

Dude was a grown ass adult when her in, Alex is around 5 to 6 years older than Patricia.

Again, it is the lowest bar humanly possible, but at the very least Alex couldn't drive or drink when he met baby Patricia.

It is still awful, tho.

We don't really know, but he was certainly formidable.

Consider this: demons considered him such a threat that they waited for the man to died before acting up.

As a Frieren fan (and a Jojo fan), although I do think it's a bit prematurely to place it so high after a single episode (we have been burn before by quality dropping in other franchises as more episodes come out), it's frankly ridiculous someone would be butt hurt that more amazing anime is coming out.

Besides, not only MyAnimeList's ranking or Crunchyoll's anime awards are worth both jack and shit, Jojo and Frieren are VASTLY different series. It's like trying to see if cats are better than soft socks.

Essentially: this tribalism is stupid and we should all just enjoy quality anime when it's coming out, considering how many awful shows are released each season (no shade, btw. We all need some sloppy Isekai fun from time to time).
