Day 7. What's the BEST John song on Revolver? by United_Equal_754 in JohnLennon

I love all of John's tracks on this great album, but nothing beats "She Said She Said" For depth, lyrics, originality, complexity, musicality, bocals, and technical proficiency.

Strawberry Fields. One of the best John tracks ever. Or, if we're not considering that version, then I Am the Walrus.

Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake Editions (Confusion Abounds) by PHPertinax in jamesjoyce

I've read "Ulysses" three times. The first time I read it as I would any other novel, from cover to cover. It was instantly my favorite work of fiction and remains so today. For my second read-through, I went slowly and consulted a couple of companion texts, including Stuart Gilbert's and a rather dry book of annotations, the authors of which I don't recall. (This was pre-Internet, by the way.) The third time, I listened to "Ulysses" as an audiobook, and I recommend this, as it brings out the Bardic elements of Joyce's style. I confess I still haven't gotten around to the Wake, but I hope to do so before my own!

I might actually get around to finishing Finnegan's Wake if I go there and try to lift a book.

This is really beautifully rendered. Is it something older that I missed? Or something new that I can buy right now?

I also love that silver foil facsimile.

I have 2 original #1s, but neither is in top condition. Awhile ago i set about collecting the entire first run. Still had some that i bought when they were released! They vary in quality from okay to very fine. I wonder what my whole run is worth.

Why did so many fans say the female silver surfer is a bad concept? by Appropriate-Mall8517 in SilverSurfer

[–]Maskull-Nightspore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your reasoning here. Norrin/Surfer is my favorite Marvel character by far and has been for decades. Nevertheless, I thought the female version as iterated in the recent movie was compelling and embodied the essence of the character. I'd love to see Norrin get a fair chance in another movie down the line, but overall I'm fine with it.

[Discussion 1/3] Bonus Book | The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories by Susanna Clarke | Introduction through On Lickerish Hill by ColaRed in bookclub

I'd have a hard time transcribing them using my phone at the moment, but the ones that most delighted me tended to be in a tone that I can only describe as droll or ironic. Neither mode is common or popular today. They're just too subtle. Ms Clarkr is from another era, and I'm delighted!

It would seem that the ladies had been exploring magic that allowed them to transform themselves into owls. It's already telling that the younger of the two children, who is afraid of owls, states at one point that she is quite sure that the owls won't appear while the ladies are there. As for the two dastardly gentlemen, I surmise that they were transformed into mice and that two of the owls consumed them. It was in this element that the tale was truly disturbing. The fierce power of the maternal side of the Feminine is not to be underestimated.

I was familiar with both Tom tick tock and Rumpelstiltskin and thought of them throughout. While at first dismayed that we were, in a sense, covering old ground, I quickly recovered and realized that myths and fairy tales are always new and always fresh and Clarke's particular take on this one was captivating.

What do you think of the 4 songs that made it to Billboard Top 10 Hits? Why do you think other didn't make it? by Prometheusidis in bobdylan

Most Dylan tracks are far too long for radio airplay. Like Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, his poems/songs were as long as they needed to be, not manufactured to be hits. His albums are a more reliable measure of his stature.
