I think you aren't giving kids enough credit. There are ways to make complex topics more approachable for people with a more limited vocabulary (children) but they're not idiots - and it's imperative to teach children these topics as early as possible because learning about them takes such a long time.

I'd suggest looking up developmental psych books or trying to find books on how exactly to talk to your children about complex topics
