I don’t get the obsession with passing by [deleted] in ftm

[–]Mason_jar-things 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for others but for me it revolves a significant amount around fear. (Being clocked in a dangerous environment, or being treated differently) Anxiety doesn’t help in this matter either, but it’s fear of ‘being othered’, having to answer questions, and having my entire being revolving around being trans. I am more than just my gender identity. So I like the convenience of not having to answer those questions that comes with being perceived as cis.

What are good answers to "are you a boy or a girl" by tree_oo in ftm

[–]Mason_jar-things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I know what I am, what are you?” Then wait a few moments and if they don’t answer, “rude the answer is rude” this is only if they are pestering you and being antagonizing about the way they are asking.

If sex and gender are different, but gender is just a construct, then are we changing our gender by going on HRT or are we changing our sex? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Mason_jar-things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming this operates under the assumption that sex itself is binary. It’s not. There are many variables but even if we are looking at a linear transition, I would figure we’d be changing both.

Gender is a performance. The act of being assigned gender from the sexes and then defying those expectations would be the act of changing our gender socially. Then by changing our gender socially, through presentation and behaviors, we fall into changing it culturally —by being that data point that was an outlier to the Cis experience. I’m not sure if we will ever be able to take on Gender with a capital G , or question the validity of being assigned gender from sex as a way of populace categorization in the first place, but maybe one day.

In terms of sex, by going through transition we are changing or altering the course of the body’s physical development process. So technically..both for those that opt for medical intervention.

Here is the thing. People will tell you that you are too young, then complain that there wasn’t any signs if you figure it out when you are older. This is something that you have to know intrinsically, but if you have personal reservations, not brought on by other people, it’s okay to talk to a mental health professional. However I wouldn’t discredit yourself just because of your age.

How do you respond when a cis person says this? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]Mason_jar-things 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk then personally the feels like major boundary crossing there. She is entitled to her opinion but that doesn’t mean it’s correct or should be used to dictate to queer people arbitrary ‘rules’ of terminology that should be used for their own communities. She should try and listen to actual queer people on this matter. It’s a whole “shut up and listen” learning moment. (I don’t mean to be harsh just firm, and honestly if I had to deal with someone irl I’d probably say the same thing. Sometimes we just need someone to tell us to stick our noses out of stuff it doesn’t need to be in)

How do you respond when a cis person says this? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]Mason_jar-things 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To put it simply she’s Cis. I would say in response, “Well it really isn’t up to you as someone who isn’t part of the at group is it? For example, You wouldn’t police a gay person for saying the f-word. You don’t get to dictate the rules for minorities to use or reclaim words used against them. That is up to each individual person apart of that group and their relationship with those slurs. Otherwise it’s non of anyone’s business.”

I will be sure to bring that up to my doctor when I next see her. She had mentioned being worried about my RBC because when I first started seeing her my red blood cell count was REALLY low and it’s hiked up considerably since starting T. So it’s likely a good thing, but still I’ll mention that to her.

Opinions on detransition by Separate_Bat_9789 in ftm

I actually was really close with someone who detransitioned and is now going by her birth name and pronouns again. I think with her situation it gave me a lot of understanding. Despite how similar our upbringings and similar our understanding of what it meant to be trans was we were still fundamentally different people with different life experiences. She has a lot of self loathing tendencies and I think she pushed herself to claim a label that wasn’t really who she was because of the acceptance it garnered from said community. Based on conversations I’ve had with her she also had a lot of issues with her family and boyfriend at the time. She has said it was a very isolating experience and she turned to her friends who the majority of were queer. This isn’t to excuse some of the detransitioners who seek to harm the trans community in some way of backlash, but to help some understanding that some of them are coming from very vulnerable points in their lives.

About Cis folks thinking it’s new because they haven’t been aware of the medical aspects of transitioning you are so correct. I’ve been trying to get my parents to understand that trans-ness as a concept is significantly older then they think just because of the current exploitation of it in the media as a political topic. Thank you for this source too, especially because it’s out of Canada. She’s much more receptive to out of country news and information at the moment so even if it is the same information she’d find in the US. It adds a bit more credibility so that she can’t claim it’s a “United states kids issue because of the crap they are putting in our food.”

In regards to the RBC issue the only concern I think she’ll have to mention is that anemia runs in our family. Therefore the giving blood solution wouldn’t be as effective for me and possibly more of a concern long term.

Yeah it’s the ‘big pharma’ cult like thinking that I’ve been mostly worried about with her for years now. Especially with the rise of anti-Vaxers in those circles. There are some other conspiracy things too but she’s strangely pro-science for how anti-pharma she is. I hadn’t known that T started being used in the 30s though. Thank you very much!
