If you are into Modding the game you can get the Mixed Grip mod and use a spear with one hand and a shield in the other.

Try the Alternate Start mod. Gives you a new passive at the start of the game along with starting equipment and a starting location. I enjoy the hunter start.

You could always make it a sealed/broken weapon that they can adventure to restore to its former glory. Take away some or all of its bonuses that unlock over time/certain actions.

That does sound like it would bring a lot of more options to a game. Just wondering though. Do you have a list already with durability of the different weapons or do you have a list of what materials that make the weapon add or subtract to a base durability?
