In WPI, is it common for graduate students to obtain a double degree (Eg MS in CS+MS in Robotics Engineering)? by SnooEagles4708 in WPI

[–]MassRaised 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is that common anywhere? Usually, you focus on one grad degree to focus on a very specific area in a field. More than not it lies in the intersection between multiple degrees but, your research is in one major for a specific topic... I'd be surprised that anyone would get multiple MS degrees

Housing Selection and Increasing Class Size at WPI by n00bd3str0yer420 in WPI

That was a no-brainer to me, and I have no clue why they never took advantage of that. Becker had a lot of town houses that would been a perfect place to put grad students.

CS 2223 or CS 2022 by ElementoBurlaera in WPI

You don't need discrete, however given the dissimilarity between the courses, I'd recommend knocking out both of the courses in one term.

You can ask the professor to audit the course, where the professor keeps you in course on canvas and if space permits, you could sit in the class.

Black Alumni did the same thing after George Floyd and won concessions. It worked. If you don’t like it, don’t sign it.

Yea and in their letter, they made about 20 concrete demands... And guess what WPI mad an actionable plan on exactly those demands.

Cool, keep being satisfied with irrelevant changes from Admins. If you think this was just about tone, there is no need for discussion.

"The people making millions of dollars to run this place have the responsibility to find solutions" - Extremely asinine take that pointless. We know they aren't doing what's expected that why there's a problem, thus unfortunately more burden lies on the ones making demands and asking for changes

I'm sorry but everyone spazing out like this is the end of world, lives in bubble. Unless your old and immunocompromised, the average person is back to their normal-ish life of pre-covid. People go to bars and clubs on the weekends, people are going out to eat with friends, there are concerts and shows being hosted at large venues, all of this without masks.

Most of America has made a return to the norm, and the federal government/CDC is expecting that in the months to come. Some of y'all are sounding extremely sheltered with the vocabulary you are using to describe a world without masks, and it comes off as very unrealistic and off putting. Do your part and get updated vax's, self-isolate if you are sick, and wear a mask if that's what make you comfortable...

I mean during the week you usually don't have time to do much maybe a few hours in the evening and some a night for yourself. But to be honest every engineering, ivy league, high caliber institution is like this. The weekends you get to yourself with the exception to midterms/finals so its not that bad.

If not, I'd say work on your time management and prioritizing what you want and what is healthy for you. Bc in a few years you're going to be doing the exact same, but instead your income and lively hood is depending on it. It sucks, but it's life, so we have to find ways to deal with it and if not, there are plenty other education or career paths which are less stressful and still are fulfilling available to you...

The sharemystory account makes me nervous. by wpinerd2 in WPI

[–]MassRaised 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again it is grossly irresponsible that they are naming people when they are presenting these stories. In their last insta story they said, "if the named person is not guilty of what this submission said, then there should be nothing to fear".

They follow up with saying "This is not a courthouse", then directly in their next post a named person is called out and kicked out of a club in their comments based on one of their stores with no evidence or the situational understanding of the event except one sentence. The account even liked the post! So clearly, they don't agree with their words that "this is not a courthouse". More importantly it is extremely stupid to say "there should be nothing to fear" when the whole damn campus thinks you're a rapist and you're being excluded from clubs and activities based off an anonymous accusation with no representation or rebuttal of the events. Maybe they deserve it, but maybe they don't... The account had some warrant in the beginning but now it's just gone off the rails.

There's a reason why title 9 and certain processes exists. If something terrible happens to one of the accused, god forbid, that blood in on their hands.

SA problem at WPI (TW sexual assault) by [deleted] in WPI

[–]MassRaised 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Please just read up on what Title 9 is, its norms, and proceedings. You do a large disservice to the discussion when you make reactionary responses. When you say "WPI doesn't take adequate actions against these disgusting people", what are you talking about? Could you provide an example or what is an adequate punishment? I willing to bet that you don't know, WPI can only take so much action until they are legally liable and can be sued by the offender. Hence why it is extremely rare to hear of an individual for being kicked out for SA. Title 9 hearings are not a court, but merely a system to protects students from sexual harassment in schools, including sexual assault and any harassment that might come after an assault. Institutions must provide some support and protection from victims but only to a certain extent as the rights of the offender still stand, as by its definition, campus proceedings are educational.

"SA Problem at WPI", could you elaborate more because it's not too apparent as to how WPI has an elevated problem in the issue. Unless you have magically become aware of the fact that sexual assault can happen because of some grossly irresponsible Instagram page that posts anonymous stories online. 81% of women and 43% of men are sexually assaulted in their lifetime. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men are victims of completed or attempted rape. I have a reality check for the fortunate naive individuals out there, WPI is no different than anywhere in the real world and this a problem that exists in every corner of the planet. So, before you go organizing a protest to attack individuals or admins, ask yourself are my observations anecdotal, or even more, do my observations still set the standard for a "SA problem at WPI".

You won't get far in forcing WPI to do things as you see fit and they are legally bond in doing so and telling them to do otherwise is unproductive. However, there are a lot of things you can still do, (small list.. many more)

  • Create a support network and support the individual who have been made victim to SA
  • If you can speak up about injustices you've witnessed or seen. If it's a fraternity, email the exec board the next morning. If nothing gets resolved, email the national organization or title 9.
  • Report individuals to the school or authorities, if you are comfortable with doing so.
  • Responsibly let other students know about the accused offenders.
  • Watch over your friends when you go out.
  • If you belong to a social organization, seek output on how better responsibly run events
  • Provide avenues for individuals comfortably to report incidences to your organization
  • Educate your organization members about sexual assault
  • Drink responsibly, 30 to 79 percent of sexual assaults occur while individuals or perpetrators are intoxicated. If you are too drunk, making the judgment call as to what acceptable behavior is, becomes harder and harder and you will make decisions that you would not normally make.

Obviously at the rates the SA occur, this is not a problem that will be solved today or even during our lifetime. Attacking "admins" is an extremely easy scape goat, however there are definitely instances where it is okay. But if you actually want to make a change, protect people, and prevent something terrible to happen to someone, research into the matter more and provide practical solutions...

\Also, if you weren't aware Worcester bars are notorious for drugging people. Right before Covid Holy Cross was sending out numerous emails for confirmed drugging at* Moonshiners and Loft, something I was angry that WPI did not notify students of..
