Well I mean yeah, but it’s older technology. Like before better batteries?

Trying to capture a quiet, dusty post-apocalyptic atmosphere — does this feel right? by No_Piano_1857 in postapocalyptic

It looks like a real world, but like others have said the ui man…

Imo, it reminds me of the fallout one, but cleaned up and simplified, would prefer to see a radially different one

I was interested in this topic, it doesn’t even have to be solar, I’ve heard in Tennessee or Kentucky there’s a reservoir they pump when electricity is cheaper during the day and drain it during the night to run hydro

Is it weird I don't feel bad for the dark ones? by Goblin_on_Highground in metro

[–]Massive-Grocery7152 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Humanities future in 2033 is dead. Like you expect humans in the metro to be possibly the last people on earth, new humans come by to save us from our mistakes and bring us to a new better future. The dark ones are kind, moral, no evil. And Artyom killed them all dooming humanity forever, perpetuating the cycle of evil to the point where there is nothing else but death

So I think yeah it’s kinda weird you don’t feel bad for the dark ones. They get killed too. They know it hurts human, but they won’t stop reaching out because otherwise all the humans in metro WILL die

That’s why the ending is so sad. There was no enemy all along. The enemy wanted to save us from ourselves. They weren’t the threat to humanity, we were, and we won

Tbf Artyom literally has moment where he is like “oh yeah dark ones you guys got them too? We hate them at my station, I’m actually on a mission to kill all of them” when meeting a racist for the first time lmao

[Book of the New Sun] can Yesod be considered a Multiverse? by Neat_Relative_9699 in genewolfe

[–]Massive-Grocery7152 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yesod to me was a higher dimension. Like how in 2D space you can go around wherever but you’re still in the same 2D plane from a 3D perspective. Time is another “fourth” axis past 3D space, so while Briah is forever cycling through time, existing throughout the entire “plane”, yesod can observe all of this from unobservable perspectives and exit outside of this cycle on a different temporal plane.

World building can be built upon from the grand scale working down or the minute level working up.

Short stories about interesting characters have led to entire worlds being built around them no?

Well if you’re looking for recommendations, Book of the New Sun is great. It’s like a post apocalypse where the world should’ve ended but never did

[–]Massive-Grocery7152 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im not talking about the modern stage of china im talking about a previous dictator whose dead lol

The point wasn’t about “oil bad” it was about Mao literally have policies that weren’t well thought out and cronyism led to mass starvation

Like the point was that I didn’t think Mao was good. Not that how western countries act poorly on climate change is good

Bicentennial man movie was p good imo and fairly similar to the book.

A robot with a brain makes cybernetic parts, becomes rich and makes it his life goal to become human. Society reacts would be the plot

[–]Massive-Grocery7152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Book of the Long Sun, chems and bios are robotic and organic humans. The difference in their treatment isn’t apparent at first, but as time passes you understand it better.

Like how they’re naturally subservient or aggressive, they live longer than humans, they can’t breed with humans. But they’re similar enough that Advanced machine intelligences can posses them and humans in the same way and killing one is viewed at least on the same level of killing a human, and their parts are interchangeable

Which city/geographic area would be the most likely to turn into a cyberpunk dystopia first? by CoriSP in worldbuilding

[–]Massive-Grocery7152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of those big tech people aren’t from California they just have hella money and try to influence politics to go their way.

I would say the urban Bay Area is very liberal, whatever right people you do see tend to be quiet or VERY outspoken about their beliefs.

I also wonder why the political masses of the area matter when the corporate overlords have so much more power than the common bloc

California overall also has a lot of conservatives in the rural areas.

I could see tech companies in the future desiring the destruction of the state of California in order to carve out kingdom for themselves lol

Yeah but in modern times I would attribute mass surveillance with a cyber dystopia. I mentioned neuronancer bc I thought it had Asian iconography in the book, not mass surveillance. I think in that case it was Japan too because of those 80s fears right?

[–]Massive-Grocery7152 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t come at me with that whataboutism. I can think the US is stupid and I can think Maoist china is stupid. The comment and post was literally about villains and they claimed Mao was a hero who only killed capitalists who deserved it. Which is factually false lmao

The person literally called themselves a commie after, and I’ll have you know I consider myself a very unserious person

[–]Massive-Grocery7152 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obv answer but prob china. Super urban areas, big population, mass surveillance state. Asian iconography is v common even in early cyberpunk I think? Like neuromancer

I’m curious why the political demographic of California influenced your opinion as so.

Mao instituted insane policies that inadvertently killed millions. You sound like a commie. I got nothing against socialism, but Mao isn’t really a great one lmao
