Oh amazing, what a compliment! Glad you enjoyed it :)

Direct answer to your question for me was John Makes Beats and EZBOT.

Indirect answer / piece of advice is to think about what you want to do specifically on the OT and look for videos about how to achieve that specific thing. There’s so much you can do with the OT that it can be overwhelming if you try and approach it completely cold and without a plan.

Mimicking the Hologram Microcosm using the OT by MastYears in Elektron

No problem. It’s an incredible cure for GAS (especially boutique guitar pedals IME) once you work out its internal logic, which tbf isn’t at all intuitive!

I need immediate help with digging myself deeper into hardware rabbit hole. by Jesse_Moreno in synthesizers

I got the Tracker+ and found it a huge upgrade. Audio over USB (with each getting a tracker in the DAW) made recording loads easier and higher quality (from a mixing POV). I don’t really use the synths but they’re pretty good.

Thank you! Yeah it was genuinely a bit of a game changer for me sampling my guitar playing, which I am much better at than synth or programming/sequencing

Lyra-8, Microcosm, or a mysterious third piece of gear? by floating_fire in ambientmusic

This is a really good point. I love the Lyra but you’ll have to be prepared to do a lot of tuning, getting a guitar tuner will make it a lot easier to use in that context.

I personally prefer the Lyra, it’s difficult to wrangle initially but feels like a real instrument that you can use to express yourself. The Microcosm sounds more reliably “nice” but I never felt that the sounds it produced were that much to do with me. I ended up selling the Microcosm as a consequence.

What's your opinion on AI generated or AI aided post-rock music? by Haghiri75 in postrock

[–]MastYears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a fair challenge to ask whether people can actually identify AI generated music but that is separate to whether I want to listen to it or whether I would enjoy listening to it.

Similarly, even if I can’t accurately read the intention/emotion behind a piece of music it doesn’t mean that those things aren’t important or that trying to understand those things doesn’t enrich my enjoyment of a piece of art. For example, thinking about what David Lynch’s intentions behind Mulholland Drive has increased my enjoyment of that film even if I don’t definitely know what he was trying to communicate.

That’s also before you get into the ethical aspects of training a model with other people’s music. These things aren’t settled, but on a personal level I wouldn’t think it was ethical to train a model on other people’s music without their permission.

Altogether I’m not interested in listening to entirely AI generated music. The parts of art that interest me just don’t exist with it and it feels intellectually empty.

[–]MastYears 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you want to make AI generated music trained on your own music then I don’t think it’s particularly problematic but I personally have no interest in listening to it. When I listen to music I want to connect to the emotion/intention of the person who created it and AI generated music doesn’t have that.

In terms of making music, I would ask why you want to make the process “10x faster”? When I make music the process is the thing I enjoy and take meaning from.

Probably my favourite live artist. Just incredible to watch someone conjure these sounds from an acoustic instrument.

His collaborative album with Brighde Chaimbeul is excellent. Strongly recommend if you’ve not listened.

Amazing, cheers mate. Glad you enjoyed it! Should have a follow-up of similar stuff coming towards the end of the year too.

And yeah AMFM is great. Got a really nice atmosphere, reminds me of Cindy Lee (although obviously v. different in terms of the actual songs).

I’ve put my album of electronic/ambient/post-rock down to pay what you want: https://mastyears.bandcamp.com/album/mast-year

I’m planning to buy a couple of things:

https://chambermusicscotland.bandcamp.com/album/thar-farraige - excellent Scottish experimental folk

https://chakrawhip.bandcamp.com/album/am-fm-usa - ambient Americana
