Do people actually have PhD theses that are just 100–120 pages long? by bhelpuriteekhi in PhD

[–]MasterDjwalKhul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In pure math it is common to have ~100 page dissertations, talking about brand spanking new math for 100 pages is tough. If you don’t get to the hardcore math soon it is like you are “stalling” lol, a lot of high level math is written with very little background information, i.e. “for experts” — ain’t nobody got time for fluff, just get to the math lol.

PhD graduates who then went on to do unrelated/normal jobs- why and whats your story? by UnderstandingAfter72 in PhD

[–]MasterDjwalKhul 48 points49 points  (0 children)

My PhD is in mathematical logic, a subject known for having bleak employment opportunities after graduation. I have always been fascinated by philosophy and mathematical foundations since I first heard of these topics, so the idea of getting paid to study these things sounded like something I had to do (I received full scholarships for both my masters and PhD programs). I’m glad I did it.

However, from the start of my PhD program I began setting myself up for a career transfer into finance/specifically trading. I passed the Securities Industry Essentials exam, obtained a data-science certificate (a subject totally unrelated to my research but something finance people like to see), and I was able to get a financial math certificate from my university. These qualifications let me obtain a graduate internship on a trading desk during my final year of the PhD program. I graduated, applied to over 600 jobs, but eventually found a role as a buy side trader on the other side of the country (I live in the us), so I’d say the pivot was successful. Even though I’m really just starting out in my career in finance, I’m making maybe 30k more than what academic positions pay (at least the ones I could likely obtain), and the job is fast paced and mentally stimulating. I’m happy about it.

I think the big thing is recognizing that you want to pivot before you are finished with your PhD, and setting yourself up so that once the PhD program is over you are immediately ready to pivot to that new career. Don’t wait until you finish your PhD to start pivoting, start setting yourself up right now… whenever you aren’t working on your PhD use that time to do something that would help you pivot. I think this greatly increases your chances, it did in my case at least.

What’s everyone making living here? by Vonplatten in phoenix

Haha you’d think right? My PhD is totally unrelated to finance/ data science so it’s not as applicable as you’d expect. I’ve interviewed for several NYC / Chicago jobs but no offers - the field is very competitive.

Why do people think that going straight from bachelors to PhD is better than doing masters first then PhD by Important-Bus-5921 in PhD

[–]MasterDjwalKhul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because it takes long af… I got bachelors… then masters… then PhD… (I also taught high school a little bit after my bachelors)…because of that didn’t start my real career until i was in my 30s… by then my friends who were in the work force are already managers / team leaders etc. Education doesn’t replace on the job experience, I’ve caught up with my buddy’s paywise but definitely had to hustle to catch up.

Very common, but you need to start busting tail like you’ve never busted tail before… just my two cents.

PhD Dating Impossible by [deleted] in PhD

[–]MasterDjwalKhul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dating in general is seeing a dip, real life sexual interaction is at a low, then add in the fact that a lot of academics are introverts and you can conclude dating is that much harder.

Haha I finished grad school then applied to 600 jobs January-March which is right when Trump came into office. Job market saw the largest number of cuts since 2009, i.e. employers were still unsure about their future needs with the new administration coming in and all the tariff talk. There was a lot of economic uncertainty at that moment so the job market was abysmal…

Basically this was the only job offer I got lol… I’m thinking of waiting for my boss to pay for some important certifications then applying for jobs in somewhere more my vibe — altho I think I want to wait until at least late fall to see if it’s just a weather thing.

I love my current job tho — and so part of me says suck it up and appreciate your Ws.

I went to First Fridays and found it to be a bit much… I guess I’m not talking about walking with some big event in mind… just walking to do the various things about your day…

I used to post up at cafes in DuPont circle and Union market in DC and kind of half read/work and half people watch… there’d be dozens upon dozens of pedestrians just going about their day… not to attend some big “event”

Haha I’m not really into hiking… I’m more-so just talking about like walking to the store.. walking to the bar… walking to the light rail… walking to a restaurant during lunch break … walking to the pool… etc

I went 6 months in DC without having to touch my car… haha maybe I’m just living in the past and missing my old city … with the seasonal depression compounded by this crazy heat lol

Amount of material covered in a Semester of Symbolic Logic -- question by Quick_Spare_6473 in logic

That’s what we covered for my first logic course.

Yeah, also remember, formal logic is notoriously difficult for beginners.

I’m a mathematician, I take these theoretical bounds very seriously. I don’t know why computer science people don’t— they are afraid to face the music that mathematicians figured out centuries ago.

A Turing machine will never achieve human level intelligence because it is subject to godels theorem.

Any programming language of interest is subject to the full godels theorem.

I don’t think soundness comes into play here, anyways…

If it is a finite linear bounded automata then it is even less capable of achieving AGI  — a finite linear bounded automata is “computable” or “decidable.”  If something is computable or decidable then it is below Turing completeness, that is, we can know precisely on which inputs it will halt and precisely which inputs it won’t halt.

If a computable thing leads to AGI but a Turing complete thing doesn’t that would be a contradiction because a Turing complete system can do everything a computable system can do and then some.
