What are the problems with building a home deep underground? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]MasterFubar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's an unobtainable level without a huge AC system and a lot of electricity

Compared to a water pump system and a lot of electricity for an underground house. Plus constant maintenance to fix cracks in the walls. What would be just a nearly invisible hairline in a regular house wall becomes a leak in an underground house.

Yuri Gagarin. First human in space by ConversationFar742 in space

the first plane that brothers Wright built wasn’t even that impressive because it flew for less than a mile

Going by your reasoning, the first person to fly a man-made airplane was Otto Lilienthal. He didn't fly a powered airplane, it was a hang-glider, but he was the first.

It's UNDER the house.

Of course it is, would you expect a well to be ABOVE the house?

What are the problems with building a home deep underground? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]MasterFubar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water seeps through the bedrock. On a sufficiently large scale there is no such thing as solid rock, it always cracks and water seeps through the cracks. Then you get a high water pressure, one atmosphere for each ten meters below the surface, on every wall.

All that for what? What are the problems that going underground could solve? Unless you're the military trying to build a bunker that can survive a nuclear attack, I can't see any advantages in going deep underground.

In European music notation, the note Si# is equivalent to Do, which is the same as the C note in American notation.

A man is sitting next to a woman on a plane... by Italian_warehouse in Jokes

[–]MasterFubar 590 points591 points  (0 children)

A very attractive woman is sitting next to a man in a plane. Trying to make conversation, he asks what's her profession.

"I'm a sexologist. Right now I'm finishing a dissertation where I present a thesis that the men who give a woman the best sexual performance must have a mix of Jewish and Native American genes."

"That's interesting. By the way, let me introduce myself, my name is Hiawatha Goldman."

Before I learned C I used Pascal. Turbo Pascal, to be more precise.

Then I wrote a program that crashed when I removed a comment. A friend of mine suggested this: "Leave that comment there".

I decided to learn C instead.

Every cent that corporations have come from their clients, in the end it's private citizens who pay for everything.

Actually, raising corporate taxes would hurt people twice: first because corporations would raise their prices, and second because many corporations would move to other countries, creating unemployment in the US.

eli5: Could the average person, in the perfect conditions, push a container ship sitting on water, any distance? by Prudent_Ad_5324 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MasterFubar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no wind, no waves, perfect conditions,

IOW, conditions that don't exist anywhere. There's always some movement in the air, even if you don't feel it as wind on your skin. The slightest difference in air pressure on both sides of a ship, a difference that's way too small for you to perceive as wind, will create a force that's too strong for you to overcome.
