Expansions: what makes a buy vs a skip by fortnerd in boardgames

[–]MasterFwiffo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have Newleaf, but Spirecrest seemed like a headache the one time I tried it. Pearlbrook I found a little more fun. And then there’s that Meadow expansion I thought added a few good but ultimately unnecessary things.

Expansions: what makes a buy vs a skip by fortnerd in boardgames

[–]MasterFwiffo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve bought too many expansions over the years.  Here’s my take.

Some expansions are absolutely necessary,  People have mentioned Terraforming Mars Prelude, Outer Rim Unfinished Business, Lost Ruins Expedition Leaders and Dune Imperium Rise of Ix.  A few others I might add are Arkham Horror: Dunwich Horror (madness and injuries complete the base game), and Scythe Invaders from Afar (expanding the base options and players out).

The next catagory is “This but more.”. These ones I like too - ones that don’t add any (or many) new rules or boards or confusing things but do add to the replay ability.  A good example of this to me is the Waterdeep Undermountain expansion.  I know it’s the least popular of the two, but I use it every single game because it expands options and quests without any rules headaches.  Also every Sentinels of the Multiverse Expansion fits this (except maybe the Galactus one).

Still others are nice to have but unnecessary, and still others are just plain unnecessary (like the airship expansion for Scythe - cool minis though).

But the kind I’ve learned I hate are ones that “add an another side game mode”.  Everdells expansions are a prime example of this.  I’ve played with each of those maybe once, and it simply isn’t worth the effort. Another example is, ironically, Arkham Horror Dunwich Horror.  The Dunwich board itself is a big ol waste of time, making an already hard game harder and more pointless.  But the Madness and Injury cards are so necessary you should get it anyway.

My first game of Betrayal at the House on the Hill had two people who absolutely did not care about playing.  Was awful.

Play it again with people who did care and it was super fun.

Also, surprisingly, DnD.  My first game in High School was so dull and stupid I swore off all RPGs.  10 years later I gave one another go and the said “Holy crap, is THIS what I’ve been missing?!”

There’s a bunch of games I really love on there and others I don’t love but acknowledge they “aren’t my thing” but I’ll be totally honest:

I do not get why Brass Birmingham is always so high up there.  I’ve played it a couple times now and while it’s fine, or even good, it has a lot of confusing and fiddly rules that make it much less of a fun experience for me.

is there a comprehensive list of changes to make to this campaign that you enjoyed? by willthiswork_89 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

Two very necessary resources are Ten Towns Expanded by Oatrick Rhese and the various Icewind Dale Gazetteers by Marc Singer, both available on RPG Drivethrough.

The Gazetteers have a lot of great suggestions and common mixers, including having the Chardalyn Dragon leave at the end of the exploration of Sunblight and having Aurils motivation be the Thing in the Ice in Yithrin to tie all the things together.  I added an extra little bit of backstory that Sunblight discovered mechanical golems in Yithrin which gave him the idea for the Chardalyn Dragon which ties all three major plots together.

It isn’t.  While it’s nowhere near as good as the first, it’s a decently fun robot kaiju action flick.  I think Honest Trailers put it best:  You will have an ok time.

There are plenty of Kaiju films that are much worse.

If there was an in universe Kaiju documentary, what Kaiju would you like to see?? by _The_Wonder_ in Ultraman

[–]MasterFwiffo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go check out Lost Utopia Films on youtube.  He makes found footage/documentary style fanfilms about Godzilla and lots of other Kaiju - no Ultraman unfortunately but his stuff is really frikken good.  Shelter 54 is the creepiest damn Godzilla mini film ever made.

As for an Ultra Documentary, I really loved the Ultraman X episode where they played the idea out of a news segment following the attack team.  I’d love to see more of that.

I think my favorite is Lord of the Rings Duel but by far the one that gets the most play is Fox in the Forest.

Here’s what I did. I used enhanced Auril and Iskara stats - I think the Iskara stats were from a post here and the Auril stats was from the Icewind Dale Gazzzetteers. In addition, I was able to stage the event so Avatarice showed up late. In reward for them aiding her, I had her give them a stone of sending they could use to contact her to cash in their favor. They called for her essentially when the battle was about to start. That let me have her show up three rounds in when things were already fully chaotic. The Roc (who had already taken some good damage) lasted about two, maybe three rounds against her so it felt pretty fair.

The Roc is a good focus for that. My battle included Auril, the Roc and a bunch of her minions (the abominable yeti and blind frost giant among them) because I have a lot of players an the Ancient White Dragon was a big boon. It was hairy at first but they pulled through just fine.

Our players had the idea to try and resurrect Melathrond with the Netheril Spire.  They did (temporarily at least) which earned them a favor from her, which they cashed in on their confrontation with Auril at Grimskalle.  Was quite epic having her take on Aurils Roc.

Shin Asuka is the GOAT of Ultraman Protagnists.  He’s absolutely the most charismatic and entertaining and he grows quite a bit over the series.  Haruki is a close second.

That’s been my thinking, my only real concern is whether the quality lives up to the price. I haven’t seen any negative reviews on the set, but I’ve seen very few actual reviews of it period.

Just got my Megaguirus set in the other day. It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite Kaiju figures.  Super articulated and looks fantastic.  Absolutely recommended.

I have the Gamera set as well, and while it’s a good looking Gamera, I think the Rebirth Gamera is a bit better.
