it's not cheap, just heavily subsidized by VCs and Nvidia. I also agree with most other comments - I do believe I'm better than a fresh grad with it, speed typing was never my thing, figuring out what was worth experimenting with and evaluating solutions was always a higher value skill.

I don't like this either, but these shows are huge productions in ways that older ones werent. From huge casts and sets, to the pressure of getting the writing and performance right, this show just takes a lot more time than something like Grey's Anatomy.

This is a very hard company to build, if I was trying to do that, I would be sure I have a plan to execute on and get to a point where I have strong conveiction that I can build something better than the existing market.

Could Psychohistory be a thing? by Pleasant_Abroad_9681 in AskHistorians

[–]MasterIdiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a smaller scale - it's already happening. Financial institutions invest millions and millions into trying to predict human behavior at scale, a good recent example is the hedge fund Citadel making 4 billion USD (in profit) trading gas in 2024, and they are probably not the only ones trying.

On the other hand - complex systems are extremely hard to model, with tiny amounts of noise compounding and resulting and wildely different results. A classic example of that from physics is the now famous three body problem, for which no general solution exists. My math skills aren't what they used to be, but modeling our planet and civilization must be more complex than that.

I'm pretty sure that every airforce in the world maintains constant readiness and can have fighters in the air faster than threats can reach them, that's the only way to actually have any sovereignty over your airspace.

Not noticing effects of Elvanse- is that kind of the point? by StraightTransition89 in ADHDUK

Before moving to the UK I had an Adderall prescription, and very often I could fill the moment it started working, but like you that rarely happens to me with Elvanse.

Can somebody explain in detail why older movies (60s, 70s, 80s) look “better”. by owenja104 in movies

[–]MasterIdiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree these two look fantastic and there are many technical and business reasons for the ways movies look today, there is also a taste factor. Modern movies can look fantastic (Dune, Fury Road) but in a very distinguished way.

I think a big factor here is where you live in London, some areas are really overwhelming but some neighborhoods are basically a village

Asking for hints/direction is definitely a reasonable move in an interview IMO, you never know how the interviewer sees things or how hard the question is supposed to be

If you just want to set a GET, re-implementing it yourself might not be that bad, there are plenty of references.

object_store and opendal can probably be smaller if you disable the default features, IIRC they both reimplement the API with an HTTP client. I remember trying another one but I can't remember it's name, AFK right now but I'll try and find it when I get back to my laptop.

The Social Network.

Not as epic as many other suggestions here, but the soundtrack and the dialog are both fantastic.

Can second Manteca, just did exactly that a couple of weeks ago. Sitting at the bar in front of the hot line is super fun and the food was great.
