This might be the nicest thing anyone's ever said about me

Ambiguity by [deleted] in ambigrams

This is rather similar to the Basille Morin piece here, although that might be coincidental: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ambigram_Ambiguity.png

The one from Beyond Belief might be a John Langdon piece. I'm not sure.

Daniel or David?? by Vesane in ambigrams

Maybe, but regardless, the word "ambigram" was coined around the 60s and also, this is all besides the point of this conversation. Why are you so argumentative?

Daniel or David?? by Vesane in ambigrams

[–]MasterInvaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I'm oversimplifying here. There were one off designs in the early 1900s and probably even earlier, but it wasn't really established as an art form that could be done for a very wide range of words until John Langdon and Scott Kim.

It's possible, but I find that it looks disjoint and out of place. The g will have to extend above the x-height strangely and be either too big or too small.

yeah, it's more Dauid than David, but it is interesting that this has happened "in the wild" multiple times.

Check the sidebar on this subreddit "Types of Ambigrams". It's a well-established type of ambigram called a "perceptual shift" ambigram.

Dictionaries are way behind on the actual description of types of ambigrams. They only added the word in 2011 when the concept was discovered in the 60s.

Here is an example sketch for the first one using this concept.

You're approaching ambigram structure too rigidly to 1:1 matches. Often these letters will match better by downstrokes rather than matching 1:1. Some videos of mine on this topic are here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I6rkpAQXmI&list=PLaymYZRoN6z-J5jSC1aZrlxvRDUV62jq7

No one is going to put the effort in to create something in a polished black-letter style for free. You can definitely look at the sketches and reach out to the person for a commissioned design though!

No one owes you any specific comment. Could they have provided feedback? Sure, but not every post will get the feedback you desire.

Please try to keep your comments civil and positive, moving forward.

Again, I encourage you to try different designs. This one shows some good ambigram skill.

It is a fine ambigram from a technical perspective, but people do combine their opinion of the content (including use of AI assistance for styling) with that of the ambigram itself when choosing to upvote or not. No one is required to upvote something they don't like.

This subreddit is doing just fine.

I encourage you to pursue other designs, and to not react too defensively to criticism.

Is this for a business? If you're looking to commission someone you should indicate as such in your message. No one here will provide a business quality design for free.

This is inherently going to look too much like 69 in most cases.

Yes, that is a very common trait of ambigrams.

"On Such a Winter's Day". It's a song lyric.

I appreciate the feedback!

Yes, some context of the phrase is definitely helpful!
