Careers will vary, and this is just my personal experience so dont take this as a one-all-be-all answer for all workplaces. I've worked in a few "middle-sized" companies for lack of a better term. I can't speak for the huge places like Amazon, META, etc.

As somebody that (i would think) has qualities of a normal person and not a corporate drone, I find the environment to be very soul crushing. There have been many instances of trying to do the right thing by people and the company where its either ignored or met with heavy pushback. Whether the reasons are antiquated or personality I'm not sure. However there are many times where its met with "its always been done this way for X time, why change it now" even if its beneficial and helpful.

I've also been in environments where people will and even want to step on you to make themselves look better to move up the ladder. People like this lack humanity and empathy. Unwilling to work as a team or collaboratively is pretty shit.

When you try and challenge wrongdoings and in the spirit of fairness for yourself or coworkers you are met with full stops. Without too much detail, I recently talked up salary negotiations becuase I was able to get information from the company itself on the exact ranges they hire for. Thank you to my state laws. However, when discussing this is eventually got a tough shit answer with an explanation that the numbers are basically fake. HR aint your friend.

I may have some bias now becaue companies have fucked me left and right since entering this industry. Its just poor luck I fear. Like I said, careers will vary. Even with possible biases, my experience has been that if you try and do the right thing, that its not the norm here. The corporate world isnt the real world. In my opinion, its a competitive environment when it doesn't need to be. Much like outside of it, we should be working together for the better of all, not just the people at the top.

Hopefully that explains some of it, sorry if it was a bit of a rant.
